Kildare ladies club updates

October 20, 2014

Report by Rebecca Roker.

Raheens Gaelic 4 Mothers & others ladies took part in their first ever All Ireland Blitz in Naomh Mearnog in Portmarnock on Saturday 18th October. This years attendance was the biggest ever with over 1500 participants taking part. When the club heard of the initiative they were keen to start something for the ladies in the club. We started training 12 weeks ago and to date a fantastic 26 ladies have registered to take part.
We were in the fortunate position for the blitz on Saturday that we were able to field two teams who played 4 games each against various clubs from around the country. The day began with a mass warm up conducted by Irelands Mr Motivator and then it was off to the serious stuff the games. The day showcased all the good things the mums game has to offer, plenty of skill, commitment, camaraderie and plenty of fun in the process.  We were also extremely lucky to be given the opportunity to meet the President of the LGFA Pat Quill. The facilities and organisation in Portmarnock on the day were fantastic and a credit to all involved.
The Gaelic4mothers initiative is something that all clubs should introduce to their clubs as its a fantastic way of introducing ladies to the game of Gaelic Football and as well as the football element the social aspect of both the club and community benefits immensely.
Its certainly one of the best decisions we in  Raheens have made as a club in recent times. A big thank you to the club for their support and also our mentors David O'Brien and Sandra Delmer for all of their hard work.Training takes place every Wednesday evening with challenge games with local clubs also occurring on a regular basis.

U11 Girls Autumn League Round 6

Saturday the 18th of October saw Moorefield U11 girls travel to Oldgrange to play St. Laurences in round 6 of the Autumn League. The game was played in the unseasonally warm but windy conditions on the juvenile pitch. The Larries were quick to settle and with excellent points from Avril Walshe, Saoirce McGough and Katie Dooley stole a lead on the Moore's girls. Moorefield playing slightly into the breeze in the first half began to get more ball at midfield and launched several attacks which ended in goals. Play continued from end to end with great skill been demonstrated by both sets of players.
The second half began where the first left off, the Larries backs especially Grace Gibbons, Grace King ( Girl of the match)  Kate Doyle, and Abbey Stynes clearing the many Moorefield attacks. This game had some terrific blocking and had passing movements which kept to game flowing up and down the pitch, both teams enjoyed the game and a lot of water was consumed after the game. Thanks to Moorefield for the sporting game and hope to meet again, also well done to match ref. U13 Div 2 semi final report
By Dermot Lawler.
U13 Division 2 semi final Ballykelly 5-12 Carbury 4-2 Ballykelly underage ladies made it a season to remember for their underage groups when their U13 ladies qualified for a league final to complement their U14, U15 and U16 also reaching the finals for their respective divisions. The U13 girls took on Carbury in this division 2 semi final knowing that it was going to be a huge task as both teams had drawn in their league fixture. It was the girls in maroon who settled quickly and got off to the best possible start as they raced into a 7pt lead within the first few minutes courtesy of a Doireann Fahey pt within seconds of the start. On the restart  Ballykelly won possession through Saoirse Jackson who fed the ball to wing forward Katie Walsh who made no mistake as she cut through the Carbury rearguard and dispatched a low ball to the net. On the next attack it was Walsh again who goaled through a speculative high ball that ended up in the roof of the Carbury net. Carbury regrouped and went on the attack themselves and goaled through Orla Sullivan and Zoe Brierty. Only a one point game and the girls from Ballykelly knew they were in a game. It was Doireann Fahey who steadied the ship for Ballykelly with two pts and further scores from Eimear Hanlon pt, Vicki Barrett pt, Amy Ures goal and Ballykelly had suddenly found their stride. Carbury responded through scores from Megan Sullivan pt and Orla Sullivan pt. Ballykelly finished the half strongly with a goal from midfielder Saoirse Jackson and a fine fisted score from the same player which was the pick of the scores in the first half. HT Ballykelly 4-7 Carbury 2-2 On the restart Carbury tried hard to get back into the game but the girls from Ballykelly were having none of it as the rearguard of Donna Talbot, Shannon Aylward and Mia Supple were letting very little through and with keeper Hayley Grant in goals on form it was going to be an uphill struggle for Carbury. They tried hard and with goals from Kerri Byrne and Megan Sullivan they got a foothold in the game but further scores from Vicki Grattan pt, Katie Walsh pt, Eimear Hanlon pt and a long range score from Doireann Fahey and Ballykelly eased to victory. When the referee blew the final whistle it was the girls from Ballykelly who had qualified for the final on a scoreline of Ballykelly 5-12 Carbury 4-2. Carbury can be very proud of themselves for making the knockout stages of this competition and will be a team to watch out for in this division next year. For Carbury Orla Sullivan, Megan Sullivan, Jenna Kearney and Zoe Briarty can be very proud of their efforts while for Ballykelly Muireann Ures, Amy Lacey, Abbi Kemmy Doireann Fahey, Rachel Ryan and the outstanding player on display Saoirse Jackson can be very proud of their displays. This is a win for the squad however as all players have contributed hugely throughout the competition and hopefully the girls can go one step further in the league decider.
