The Late John O'Connell Mr John (Jack) O'Connell, Killarney, who died in St Columba's Hospital, Thomastown was in his 94th year. He was one of the oldest people in the parish. Jack's great interest was hurling and he was one of the last surviving member of the Killarney hurling team. An article written by Jim O'Connell in the first episode of In the Shadow of the Steeple tells us that Jack was instrumental in the revival of hurling in Killarney (1927). Just recently he held the McCarthy Cup for the first time. Jack recounted many a tale of the "clash of the ash' to his family and friends. Jack was a devoted family man who took great pride in the achievements of his nephews, nieces and all family members. He had a great knowledge of bee-keeping and this skill has been passed on to his nephews. He was very close to nature and had a great love for animals. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. The remains were received by Tullaherin church by Fr Eamon O'Gorman. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Pat Duggan PP, the lessons were read by Wattie O'Connell grandnephews and Pat O'Connell. Prayers of the Faithful were by Sinead O'Connell, Sheila O'Connell Aylward, Aisling O'Connell, Sandra Cleere (family members). Items brought to the altar- jar of honey (Pat O'Connell) dog lead ( John O'Connell) family picture, presented by Wattie O'Connell, symbolised the importance of family to Jack; Kilkenny jersey and a hurley were carried by Josie O'Connell, bringing to mind his great passion for hurling. Finally, his great devotion to the Eucharist was acknowledged when Jim and Nellie presented the water and wine. Tullaherin parish choir was accompanied by Mrs Molly Cahalane. Jack is survived by his loving family, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives and friends. Courtesy of the Kilkenny People February 2003
