Whyte, Batty

December 18, 2013
The parish has lost one of its best loved characters with the death of Batty Whyte of Lenamore. A man of warm and outgoing disposition, Batty made an enormous contribution to the local community and was held in the highest regard by everyone who knew him.
When times were tough and there was little work around, Batty moved to England to secure employment. However, his heart was always at home and he came back to the parish again where he went on to work at O'Sullivan's in Ballylongford.
He worked in the timber yard there and built up a great camaraderie with local builders and the local farming community. He was also held in the highest esteem by the management and staff at O'Sullivans.
Batty played an active part in the local community and supported everything positive that was happening in the area. He had an abiding passion for sport and whether it was football, soccer or rugby he had a great interest in all of them. He was a very good footballer in his younger days and played with Asdee back in the late 50s and early 60s.
When O'Sullivan's closed down in the late 80s Batty retired and was in good health and out and about until recent months.
The esteem in which Batty and his family are held locally was reflected in the large and widely representative congregations that turned out for the removal of his remains from Lynch's Funeral Home in Ballylongford to the local church and again at the Requiem Mass and internment which took place to Ahavalin Cemetery.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife and family.
