August 29, 2013
Martin O'Connor, Droumnakilla, Mastergeehy, Dromid passed away peacefully in Cork University Hospital on Saturday August 17th surrounded by his loving family, after a brave and dignified battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Martin was born on the 10th of November 1952, an only son to Michael and Sheila O'Connor. He married Marie on the 6th of September1980 and they had five children, Sinead, Fiona, Aidan, Deirdre and Edel. He was a proud family man had many plans for his twin grandchildren who were born on the 4th of May 2013.
Martin never complained about a day's work and made many life long friends through his work with the ESB, the company he began with as an apprentice at the age of sixteen and where he worked for forty-one years. Martin never went home until all the electricity was restored to all the houses of south Kerry.
Gaelgoir den scoth ab ea Mairtin agus d'iarr se ar gach einne cupla focail a labhairt leis. Bhi an-shuim aige sa chultuir Ghaelachand d'eist se le Radio na Gaeltachta la in dhiaidh lae.
Martin was an active member of many organisations in the community. He won numerous trophies with the gun club and took up cycling later in life where his goal was to cycle the Ring of Kerry. He was also an accomplished trainer for underage teams and the Dromid Rangers squad he guided was successful. Over the nine years, much silverware was brought home over the Bealach Oisin.
Martin had a love of the outdoors and took great pride in all that he did. Many happy hours were spent tending the vegetables in the garden. He loved farming and training his sheep dogs. He was a knowledgeable man and was always on hand to offer advice to many neighbours and friends on shearing techniques, setting the garden and the right time to bring home the turf!
Martin will be missed by many which was illustrated by the large crowds that attended his funeral. He is survived by his loving wife Marie, son Aidan, daughters Sinead, Fiona, Deirdre and Edel, sisters Cait, Eileen, Sheila and Noreen, grandchildren Iarlaith and Noah, nieces and nephews, uncle Paddy and aunt Teresa and all his extended family.
