O'Carroll, Owen

Late Owen O Carroll

The death occurred after a long illness on Tuesday December 28th 2010 of Owen (Eugene) O'Carroll, Portland, Lorrha. Owen, who was 64 years of age, was a native of Ardfert, Co.Kerry and came to live in Portumna when he took up the position of Agriculture Advisor with Teagasc. On his marriage to Claire in the mid 70's, they settled in Portland and for a time had a guest house there. Around twelve years ago, Owen got involved with the local GAA club as a selector and in management of juvenile teams where he enjoyed good success at various levels. In recent years, he served as selector with the Lorrha Intermediate team and he was thrilled to be part of that management when Lorrha went back to Senior ranks. A familiar figure at the Lorrha games whether involved, or as a spectator, Owen was unfortunate confined to attendance over the past year but he still however made the effort to get some of the games when feeling up to it. A gentle natured and friendly individual, he loved to chat and could hold a conversation on any subject. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and came in contact with him, but in particular by his family.

Sympathy is extended to his wife Claire, daughter Sarah, sons Michael and David, son-in-law Michael, grandson Patrick, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces relatives and many friends. Members of Lorrha GAA formed a guard of honour for Owen's removal and burial which took place after funeral Mass in St. Ruadhan's Church Lorrha on Friday December 31st 2010, in the adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.
