McEllistrim, Catherine

January 01, 2001
Ballylongford lost one of its most popular parishioners with the death of Mrs Catherine Mc Ellistrim (nee Kennelly) of Main Street. Catherine had been unwell for a while. Coming from a family with a strong farming and Gaelic Football tradition Catherine made an enormous contribution to the local community and was held in the highest esteem by everyone in the parish. All of her sons have distinguished themselves on the playing fields with the local Ballylongford team while her nephew Tim Kennelly was a member of the great Kerry team of the 1980s. There is also a very strong tradition of greyhounds in the family with the family having a considerable amount of success both at the greyhound track and at coursing. People of the area turned out in huge numbers to pay their last respects at the removal of her remains from Lynch's Funeral Home in Ballylongford to the local St Michael's Church and again at the Requiem Mass and internment that took place to Lislaughtin Cemetery. Catherine is survived by her husband Michael sons, Tim, Michael, Maurice and Richard daughter Helen and extended family. (Mitchelstown) June 2002
