Brick seeking performance first and foremost

April 22, 2014
Kerry minor hurling manager Ian Brick is looking for a performance against Clare tonight.

Realistically, the Kingdom are unlikely to cause a surprise when they travel to Ennis to face the Banner County in the first knockout match in this year's Munster MHC (6:45pm) but Brick says the performance is way more important than the result for the underdogs:

"All we would ask of the players is to give a performance," he says in The Irish Exminer. "We were very disappointed the last day against Cork. We didn't perform and the lads didn't give a good as account of themselves as they know they can.

"Even though we had prepared well and had played some excellent challenge games, it was just a step too far. We weren't prepared for that kind of a battle on the night.

"We are hoping to make up for that now. We simply want a performance more so than a result.

"People were saying the game in Páirc Uí Rinn was of no benefit to either side, but we learned and took a lot away from that game. It is so important we are competing in the Munster championship because up along this group of players had only been playing in B competitions.

"From U14s up they were playing at B level and while they enjoyed success, there is nothing to compare against playing in the Munster championship against top opposition.

"They had proven themselves in the lower ranks and so deserve to be in the Munster championship. There are huge benefits to be had from playing Munster championship hurling.

"It brings home to the lads the level of commitment required for this level and consequently, we are finding out which lads want to play for Kerry, want to progress up along the ranks."
