Mullane: I would have considered Kilkenny return

Retired Waterford star John Mullane has revealed that he would have lined out against Kilkenny, if asked.

In an interview with Newstalk, Mullane stated that if a phone call from the Waterford management had come, he would have jumped at the chance of lining out against the Cats.

Mullane was criticised by GAA pundit Ger Loughnane for retiring too soon and accused of letting the side down, but although he wouldn't be drawn on Loughnane's comments, Mullane did admit playing against Kilkenny is the pinnacle of any player's career.

"Michael Ryan and the management team were there. I was open to a phone call but that phone call never came," said Mullane. "I stressed in the build up to the Kilkenny game that it was the one game that I would have possibly liked to play in.

"That's only natural. I was talking to Ciaran Whelan a month or two before that and he said that the first year out of retirement is very difficult. I could see his point on that.

"He (Loughnane) is entitled to his own opinion, but I'm not going to comment on that. If I have a comment to make I will make it in my own column in the Irish Independent. For now, I think when you are dealing with ignorant people the only way to deal with them is by ignoring them."
