Waterford Crystal Cup: UCC into decider
January 31, 2010
UCC reached the Waterford Crystal Cup final at Buttevant yesterday courtesy of an extra-time victory over Fitzgibbon Cup rivals UL.
UCC 4-16
UL 2-14
(after extra-time)
A strong performance in the additional 20 minutes, during which Clare All-Ireland under 21 winner Darach Honan struck two goals, ensured the reigning Fitzgibbon Cup champions of a place in next weekend's decider against the winners of today's second semi-final between Waterford and Clare.
The sides were level at the interval in normal time and again at full-time in a game which saw Erin's Own clubman Eoghan Murphy top-score for the UCC with 2-7.
The Cork students trailed by 0-10 to 2-9 after Michael Gleeson added a second goal to the one he scored in the first half for UL, but a late scoring burst by the winners, which included a Murphy goal, left the teams level on 1-13 to 2-10 at full-time.
In extra-time, UL had no answer as Murphy and Darach Honan struck for first-period goals to give themselves a cushion, and Honan wrapped up the win in injury-time with his second goal.
