Laois hurling manager Niall Rigney believes that his charges can cause a surprise or two in this year's National Hurling League.

In a division that contains Wexford, Clare and Antrim, the Midlanders are rated as outsiders to gain promotion to the top flight, but Rigney is confident that they are in with a strong shout.

Laois face Galway this weekend in the Walsh Cup and he feels that will bring his side on in leaps and bounds ahead of the league campaign.

"We want Galway that's who we want to play and its preparation for the national hurling league," said Rigney. "I've approached it differently this year, we aim to be ultra competitive for the league."
