The death occurred recently of Mr. Joseph Egan, Mountbellew after a short illness. Joe (87) was for many years one of Mountbellew's best known business people and up until his illness he had worked in his shoe repair shop and attracted a large business from far and wide. A great community man he was for many years involved in the town development, the Tidy Towns and in earlier years the GAA Club. He was a great man for a chat and could converse with the young and old alike. His remains reposed at his residence and later at the Franciscan Oratory Chapel before being removed to st. Mary's Church. Burial took place to the new cemetery after concelebrated Mass of The Resurrection. The concelebrants included Very Rev. Fr Padraic O'Connor, PP Mountbellew, Rev Fr P. Costello, Mountbellew, REv Fr Sean Cunningham CC Tuam and Very Rev Fr John O Gorman PP Menlough/Skehana. Joe was born in Ballymacward in 1919 and always spoke of coming to Mountbellew during Hitler's reign. Family members participated in the readings, prayers of the faitful and offertory procession while on both days of his funeral large crowds were in attendance. He is survived by his wife Anne, sons Paul and joseph, daughters Mrs.Marion Dalton, Raheens, Mrs. Therese Corcoran, London, grandchildren, sons-in-law, Tim and Ray, daughters-in-law, Catherine and Caroline, brother-in-law, Nellie (Mountbellew), Winnie (London), relatives, neighbours and many friends.
