McDermott, Frank

The Late Frank McDermott The Untimely death of Frank McDermott came as a great shock to all who knew him in the Roscommon People's Association in Galway, of which he was a member since its formation in 1979 and its Vice-Chairman from 1987 to 1993. His death also came as a shock to the people of Mervue where he was a founder-member of the Mervue Gaelic Football Club in 1966. He held many positions in the club down through the years while he was also involved in the Mervue Credit Union, and will be missed by is colleagues in the ESB and its Union. He was Chairman of the Inter-Firm Gaelic Football Board in Galway City for a period in the 1970s. His death also came as a shock to the people of his beloved Strokestown, where he was born, and indeed he wore the Black and Amber of the great Gaelic football club like his father Christy before him. Frank was always a good humoured man and enjoyed the banter with his very good friends Bill Hilliard and Fr. Willie Cummins P.P. Mervue. He was the most obliging man to know, especially if you had trouble with your electricity or power, Frank would restore your power on the spot. When it came to going to football games or any events he was quick to offer one a lift in this car. The biggest loss will of course be to is lovely wife Kathleen and grand family; his sons, Terry, Gerard, Frank; daughters Mary, Carmel and Roseleen; grandchildren, brothers, sisters, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends. The homily by Fr. Adrian McGrath and the Guard of Honour provided by Frank's colleagues in the ESB, the Roscommon People's Association, and the Mervue GAA Club, were fitting tributes to a man it was privilege to call my friend.
