There were wins for Antrim, Laois and Offaly in the first round of the Walsh Cup, while Carlow and NUIG couldn't be separated.

Michael Ryan's debut as Westmeath manager ended in an unlucky 1-13 to 2-15 defeat to Offaly in Mullingar. Stephen Quirke's brace of goals helped the Faithful to a commanding 2-10 to 0-7 interval lead, but the home side battled back in the second half and Brendan Murtagh's goal had reduced the deficit to three points before they had what would have been an equalising goal controversially disallowed in the dying moments.

Offaly, who had Shane Dooley sent off on two yellow cards, hit the last two points to seal the win.

Zane Keenan marked his Laois return with a haul of 1-8 in their 2-22 to 1-8 victory over UCD at Abbeyleix. Conor McDonald scored an early goal for the students, but the hosts bounced back to lead by 0-13 to 1-2 at the break.

At Dr Cullen Park, Carlow came from 1-4 to 2-8 down at half-time to draw with NUIG, 1-13 to 2-10, while Antrim defeated DIT 1-22 to 2-12 in St. Paul's, Belfast.
