Tom Flynn admits James Kavanagh's decision to quit the Galway football squad after just one season is a blow to the Tribesmen.

The former Kildare star Kavanagh threw in his lot with Galway after transferring his club allegiances to Milltown, but announced his inter-county retirement this week due to work and family commitments.

"I haven't heard the ins and outs of it, but it is very unfortunate if he is not involved with us because he was a deadly player," the Galway and DCU midfielder said at yesterday's draws for the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cups.

"He was just a great lad to have around in the dressing-room. I don't think age is a factor, but he has a young family - he had a new born last year and a child two years before that I think.

"He is newly married in Milltown and I'm sure himself and all the Milltown boys will be trying to close the gap on the likes of Corofin."
