The Late Michael Shaughnessy It was with deep sadness that the people of the area learned of the death of Michael Shaughnessy of Castlegar and late of Caraune. Michael was the last surviving member of the St Vincent's team that captured the Galway Junior Championship title in 1949. He was worked in the building industry when a lot of physical worker was carried out and that hardened him for his hurling career. As a full back in the days when goalkeeper needed protection, Michael was fearless and was affectionately known as bone-shaker because of his toughness on the field of play but while Michael was tough, he played the game fair and became hugely popular with his own players and opponents in the intervening years. He was highly respected in the Turloughmore are and was a regular visitor back to his native parish. It was fitting that Michael Shaughnessy was brought to his native Lackagh parish for his funeral where his remains reposed before been taken to Castlegar Church. Members of Turloughmore GAA club formed a guard of honour as his remains left the parish for the last time. Michael Shaughnessy was laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Galway. Michael Shaughnessy is survived by his son, Michael, daughters, Freda, Teresa and Helena, sister Sr Theodora and wide circle of neighbours and friends. Courtesy of the Connaught Tribune 5th May 2009
