Mayo booked themselves a first Connacht senior football championship final berth in three years thanks to a 1-15 to 0-13 victory over Roscommon at Hyde Park this afternoon.

Kevin McStay’s men will face rivals Galway in the western province’s decider in two weeks’ time after producing the second-half goods against the Rossies in this one.

Aidan O’Shea’s goal saw the visitors into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead after seven minutes and, after the hosts battled back through the points of Diarmuid Murtagh, Daire Cregg and Ben O’Carroll, only a point would separate the teams (1-6 to 0-8) at half-time.

After the change of ends, it was Mayo that moved up through the gears as Ryan O’Donoghue lead an attack that outscored their opponents by 0-9 to 0-5 throughout the second period.

O’Donoghue’s frees and points from Fergal Boland and Tommy Conroy put the visitors up by six with 15 minutes remaining and Davy Burke’s charges couldn’t close the gap in the time that remained.
