Liam Mellows avenged last year's county final defeat to St Thomas' with an impressive 1-17 to 0-14 victory in yesterday's Galway SHC 'A' Group 1 opener in Athenry.

County panellist Tadhg Haran scored 0-9 for the city side against opponents who were still smarting from their All-Ireland club final defeat to Ballyhale Shamrocks three weeks earlier and who also lost county star Conor Cooney to an ankle injury late on.

In the same group on Saturday, Richard Doyle came off the bench to score two goals as Turloughmore powered to a 4-18 to 1-12 victory over a Joe Canning-less Portumna. Also in Group 1, Eoghan Nevin netted twice as Tommy Larkins defeated Castlegar 2-15 to 0-16.

In Group 2 of the SHC 'A'. Jamie Ryan hit 2-12 as Loughrea defeated Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry by 3-17 to 0-16. Elsewhere, Sarsfields beat Cappataggle 1-17 to 1-14, Ger O'Donoghue scored two goals for Gort in their 3-12 to 0-14 win over Kilandeema-Leitrim, while Oranmore-Maree accounted for Craughwell on a 1-19 to 1-17 scoreline.

In Group 1 of the SHC 'B', Athenry overcame Beagh by 1-19 to 0-18, while Padraig Pearses trumped Ahascragh-Fohenagh 0-18 to 0-11. In Group 2 of the SHC 'B', there were wins for Ardrahan, Clarinbridge and Killimordaly.
