Sweeney pleased with big ball decision

Eight Galway minor dual players were told to make a decision earlier the year, choose either football or hurling; seven went with the hurling squad and the one that didn't doesn't regret his choice.

Salthill/Knocknacarra's Cathal Sweeney has been an integral part of the Galway minor football squad ever since and on Sunday he will be trying to stop Kerry from achieving a coveted five-in-a-row of All-Ireland MFC titles.

Sweeney saw many of his former team mates climb the steps of the Hogan Stand just a few weeks ago as Galway were crowned All-Ireland MHC champions. Does he have any regrets over his decision? He answers the Connacht Tribune with an unequivocal no when asked.

"I was kind of the same level in both hurling and football so it was just 50/50, a toss of the coin, which one I wanted to decide on but my gut went with football," said Sweeney.

"I stuck with it. I was the only one to pick football, which I didn't mind, but obviously it's paid off now and I'm delighted."

Sweeney was outstanding in the semi-final win over Meath scoring the first three points of the game from wing back, but he knows that they will face a tough test against the defending champions on Sunday.

"Kerry is going to be a massive challenge. They look like a very sharp team. Their forwards are excellent but I think if we bring our 'A' game, we've a good chance. Now it's about enjoying the build up, focus on ourselves rather than Kerry and just put our heads down and work."
