Club fixtures and Builders Holiday

(Oldest Posts First)

Instead of all the hullabaloo over club fixtures it would be nice if the two weeks of builder's holidays were left free from club fixtures next year. I think this simple move would solve alot of problems that club players have.

The Meath GAA AGM is on in the next few weeks. Go to your club committee meeting and convince them to put forward that motion. Then make sure you have a good enough argument at the county convention. If enough people believe you then there will be no games for those two weeks.

Meath GAA include a 2 week holiday break around the time of the builders holidays already.

From the sounds of things there are a whole lot bigger problems than that facing club players in other counties.

The Mayo and Dublin club championships this year were a farce. Club players waiting around until October to get playing before getting bombarded with fixtures needing to be completed.

I don't mind championships being played off in September and October, for the players involved they can keep ticking over with training, league games, pints and supporting the county team for the late end of the summer whilst their counties are still involved.

Hopefully it gets a mention at the Meath AGM. I would like to see it strongly enforced and not a token two week break as has been of late....

theres a very simple answer to club players problems and fixtures problems
just do up a masters fixture list at the start of the year and stick to it regardless of inter county players availbility.
if you surveyed club players 90% would rather stick to a fixtures list and play club league and championship games accordingly
than hold up an entire summer of action, mess there family's about over holidays, mess working hours about over refixing games.
Its quite simple inter county players are getting to be involved in matches so let the club championships go ahead and if inter county players are availble so be it, if not thats the luck of the draw.

A club won't play without a county player that's the problem! Anyways is there still a builders holiday? Did te learn nothing in the last 8 years

Nothing wrong with playing league without county players.

Championship is another matter though. Hopefully the GAA get their way and the AI final gets brought forward into August. Would sort a lot out.

Good man, you would like to see it strongly enforced, but you have no problem with club players, training & drinking pints all Summer waiting till the county board decide when to play matches. Pure genius, your wasting your time on here, you need to head for Leinster House.

Exactly as it stands but if a master fixture list is done and they are made play then they won't have a choice.
the players aren't the ones wanting it held up for one guy possibly in some cases who's playing away with the county anyway.
take the Dublin championship this year it was held up till October and then less than seven days later it recommended after the all ireland final, you had guys celebrating winning the all ireland for the days after and then come the club championship game they were hardly in shape to do it justice. It just seems ridiculous as it stands that the clubs are putting two or three people ahead of the entire panel considerations by witholding games.

It'd devalue the meaning of the club championship for it to be played without county players.

You'd also see more and more players just pull out of playing county football in favour of club championship. It'd be a disaster for the intercounty game.

How would it devalue the club championship, it would only value it more for the 99% of players in the clubs as they would be put first ahead of the 1% who are already playing county football. the club championship is the major competition for club players.
Can't see why anybody would drop out of county as it's a higher level to be involved in. Instead of the ridiculous ideals we hear of being out forward it's high time we got on with club championship regardless id one or two players availability, after all they don't hold up a club championship match for one ordinary club person if he has a holiday planned.

Removing a competition of its best players will devalue it, how can it not.

Some players will not play county as a result. The pull of the club is huge for a lot of people. Particularly if you've a chance of club success and no realistic chance of Inter county success.

It's an unnecessary step anyway. It doesn't take much to come up with the alternative solution that the AI final gets pushed forward to allow more time for club football to be played in August and September. It shouldn't take 5 months to play the championship.

Its called putting the 99% of players in a club panel ahead of one player maybe on the county panel.
There's no time for the duel inter county player anymore we have faced that fact and got on with it.
if the club championship wants to be run proper it needs to be adhered to as a proper layout and played during the summer. If inter county players are available on a weekend nobody is stopping them playing but if a game falls close to a inter county game it is just hard luck. The same way it is for a club player who waited all summer and then may have to work and can't get out of ut come October and his club championship game comes around, we don't hold up games for him. It would allow club players plan their family holidays as they would know at start of the year when games are.
It would allow club players the chance to inform employers well in advance that they may need a couple of hours off.

Why are we obsessed with playing matches in the summer? Although I do think it preferable to finish up the intercounty season a little earlier.

Lads must have very demanding jobs if they can't get an hour off here and there for a match or training on occasion.

I agree.

I'd be happy enough to just always start championship towards the end of August, having had leagues finished up by mid July. Give guys time to go on holiday and get a bit of pre championship training in.

I play in Meath also, I don't know about you but I don't like championship being played at the start of April. Our group stage is just way too long.

A master fixture list sounds like a great idea but the problem is that almost all county boards will capitulate to the demands of the county team management when it comes to the crunch. County managers are always lobbying to have club championship games put back until after the next inter-county match and clubs cannot be expected to play championship without their county players. I can't see the problem ever being resolved as long as there is such a huge overlap between the club and inter-county seasons.

That's the point im making though, play the club championship games on the dates they are down for irrespective of inter county players available or not.
It's quite simple to do.
nobody is saying exclude inter county players but it's a ridiculous scenario holding up a whole championship for a minority who are actually playing away at that time as it is.

Just cut the intercounty season down to March-August bank holiday. Play club championship straight after. Play club leagues whilst the Inter county season is being played. Simples.

Having club championship being played without county players just isn't realistic. As a club player I'd rather wait and have the county players around for championship.
