Iconic Scores

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

What, in your opinion, would be your county's top three iconic scores?
They might not have been the most important or even that spectacular, but the ones that stick in your memory more than others.

For me:

1. Declan Bonner 1992 AI Final vs Dubln - the red fella hooked a left footed point over the bar and waved a fist at the crowd. The score that made us realise that we were about to become AI Champions for the first time. Incredible.

2. Michael Murphy 2012 AI Final vs Mayo - On the biggest days you look to your big players for leadership and the big man delivered after about 2 or 3 minutes. Long diagonal ball in from Lacey to Murphy, who has inexplicably been left isolated with Kevin Keane. Only one result - Murphy fields easily, brushes Keane aside and unleashes a howitzer to the back of the Mayo net!

3. Kevin Cassidy AI quarter final vs Kildare - people tend to look back on this game with rose tinted glasses. The first half was rubbish and it was really only the tension and tit-for-tat scoring in the second half, and in extra time that made it compelling viewing. The overall quality wasn't that great being truthful.

That said, in the dying moments Cass produced a point for the ages. He'd missed a similar one a couple of minutes before but if there was one thing Cass never lacked it was confidence. Neil McGee flicks a hand pass back to him about 50 meters from goal. Kildare just can't get to him as he leans back and lets fly with the outside of the left boot. It's almost like slow motion as it sails over the bar. Pandemonium.

1). Colm Judge goal v Westmeath Leinster semi-final 2010. This is the day when wee finally reached the promise land. Louth won this match by two points and it was their first Leinster final appearance in 50 years. It was nail bitting stuff in the end with Westmeath coming back in the match. Judgie scored a goal in to the Hill. When the final whistle went the Louth supporters went banana's.

2). Stefan White goal v Kildare Leinster quarter-final 1991. This was Micko's first championship game in charge of Kildare. The match was in Drogheda. Kildare were hot favorites. There was between 15,000 to 18,000 people at the match. Stefan White scored two late goals and Louth won this match by a point.

3). JP Rooney goal v Tyrone All Ireland first round 2006. This match was played in Navan. Tyrone were the All Ireland champions and at half time Louth looked dead and buried. JP Rooney scored a list minute goal to send the game into extra time. Louth had the chances to win it but it finished all square. Tyrone won the replay the following week in Omagh.

3.) Barry Owens goal vs Derry in usfc semi final 2008. Fermanagh didn't look like winning the game until he got that goal and when he did the whole place went mental.

2.) Shaun Docs point vs Armagh in 2008 ulster final. Near enough last kick of the game. Fermanagh had been well down and came back from the dead to get a draw. I was right behind the goals he took the shot into as well. Great point and the whole of Fermanagh were convinced we could win the replay.

1.) Tom Brewsters point in 2004 vs Armagh. I don't think I can do it justice quite like the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXI2tCLQQYc

An honourable mention for Sean Quigleys goal vs the dubs in 2015.

Derek Duggan's free v Mayo 1991 - unreal

In looking for a link for the above score I came across his goal v Meath on YouTube. Forgot about that one - but one of the greatest I've seen

3. Colman Kennedy's goal in the 2011 minor football final against a star studded Dublin team. Couldn't believe my eyes. Very few in Tipp believed it possible. For the record it was also one of the best goals I've seen in recent times.
2. Lar Corbetts final goal of his hat trick. It was only then we knew we could celebrate
1. Eoin Kelly lifting the Liam McCarthy. For me the greatest hurler Tipp have ever produced and at his peak only Brian Whelehan is above him in terms of the modern era (that's only my opinion!)

3. Denis Hollywood two goals in the last minutes against Fermanagh 1993.

2. Stevie McDonnell vs Kerry in the 2002 final, great score of his "weaker" left side to put us 1 up with about 7 to play.

1. Oisin McConville goal vs Kerry in 2002. Stunning goal and in my (biased) view one of the best scored in Croker that finally brought us Sam. It'll be a long time til we're that good again!

1) Kevin Foley goal v Dublin 1991. The goal that ultimately brought an end to the 4 in row saga. A goal started from our own line and meticulously worked up to the field where Foley shocked a nation and made Ger Cannings voice squeaky. Silenced the Hill.

2) Brendan Reilly point V Mayo 1996. Easily overlooked as Tommy Dowds goal came just before Reillys point from a difficult angle under the Cusack Stand to put Meaths nose in front and ultimately won us the All Ireland. Helped secure a third All Ireland and legendary status for Sean Boylan. Would begin the hilarious cycle of Mayo misery.

3) Joe Sheridan goal V Louth 2010. Sheridan secured possession near the goal and despite being fouled he composed himself on the ground to clinically find the net and give Meath a deserved and dramatic 2 point win. In doing so secured Meaths status as kings of the North East. Highlighted security inadequacies in Croke Park.

2) Kevin McManamon goal against Kerry in 2013 All-Ireland semi-final
Are you spotting a pattern here?

3) Hate to be reminded of it but Owen Mulligan's goal against Dublin was a great score. Think it was 2005

I'd agree with those 3 Lockjaw although a few contenders:

1. Brick Molloy's goal v Tyrone in 2011
Tyrone going for 4 titles in 5 years, new pretenders under McGuinness, first real acid test of his team and with all respect to Derry, I think we felt this was our Ulster Final. The way he finished it considering the scoreline at the time was something else, took a lot of balls to do it the way he did and I remember thinking we were onto something special here

2. Adrian Sweeney v Dublin, 2002
Picked up the ball out near the sideline on the 45 and proceeded to solo all the way to fisting a point in front of the Hill. I'll never forget his celebration! Pity we fell apart in the replay

3. Ryan McHugh v Dublin, 2014
After weathering an incredible storm from the Dubs, we hit them with a great goal on the stroke of half time. This was when you knew it was on.

I'm too young to remember the older days but my Dad tells me about Martin McHugh sticking a huge free against Cavan in the drawn match in '92 as well.

Stephen Cluxtons (Dublin) winning point in the All-Ireland Football Final 2011.
Seamus Darbys (Offaly) goal in the All-Ireland Football Final 1982.
Richie Bennis (Limerick) winning point in the Munster Hurling Final 1973.
Oisin McConville (Armagh) goal in the All-Ireland Football Final 2002.

The most iconic of the above four was probably Stephen Cluxtons, as it was practically the last kick
of the game and decided the destiny of the All-Ireland. Seamus Darbys was also very dramatic but
Kerry had time and an opportunity to respond.

Alan brogans point against Kerry AIF 15 - Great score and last play from a great player. Established Dublin as a great team. Dublin took over the mantel from Kerry as the standard bearers after decades of losing to Kerry.
