Segration in the GAA?

(Oldest Posts First)

Anyone notice the vast majority of Mayo fans on the Hill last Sunday were up in the corner (section A?) and a line of stewards down along between them and the Dublin fans. Is this now GAA policy? Sad if true. Mayo and Dublin fans mingled in good spirits where I was Sunday night so I fail to see why this human shield was needed on the terraces.

Noticed that alright. My son commented that it looked like a premier leaguematch with the crowd divided by men in hi-viz coats. Don't recall seeing it like that before?

That line of stewards is there for every championship game. Its not to segregate anybody it's there to stop people jumping the barrier from one section to another so one area doesn't become overfull. They are there all year when no counties other than Dublin populate the hill.

TBH I thought both sets of fans mixed very easily during and after the game, with a lot of banter flying round the Hill in particular. I'm glad to see that the segregation is not a targeted policy due to the teams involved.

For games with full capacity its always like that. It's to stop B3 & B4 getting too overful. They are there to make sure nobody hops the bar dividing the sections.

So you're saying that the Dubs also need to be segregated from themselves?

That explains that. Have never been on the Hill so wasn't aware. It just looked like there were far more of them and they seemed to be mainly restricted to one particular area so it stood out more i suppose.

Don't be talking sh*te. Know how dangerous it is for a terrace to be overful in one section??

This is the stupidest comment I have read today.

Think I'm one of very few here who would support segregation. Seen many alcohol-fueled bitterness between fans , although most stuff is harmless it can spew over into worse . Have seen fans launching bottles and flag poles at each other on the hill at the hurling final of last year.I'd say at least twenty involved firing stuff but no mention of it really after that.

Most segregation happened before the match as the stewards outside the hill 'helpfully' shepherded most Mayo supporters to the corner beside the Cusack. There were a group of about fifteen to twenty Mayo supporters behind the goal. Before the game started a group of Dubs unfurled a large banner which blocked out the view of those behind. It probably would have sorted itself out but one or two Mayo supporters tried to pull it down. This did not go down too well with the Dubs in front and there were heated exchanges and one or two blows were thrown. Most of the Dubs around didn't get involved apart from one or two imbeciles at the back who started throwing bottles of water at the Mayo contingent. A guard came along and things quietened down after that. Nothing too serious but it's as well John Casey wasn't there.

Every county has clowns that cause trouble but the reason the line is there is for safety reasons, imagine if 1 section got overcrowded and a crush happened with injuries or worse while the stewards where in the café having tea, there would be uproar, they have to be there to prevent such things happening, as regards to the dubs being behind the goals there was a lot of dubs in that area early on in the minor match, if Mayo wanted that spot then they should have gone in earlier in 1 massive group and take that area before the dubs arrived, look some people love the hill, me I hated it and don't mind paying extra for a seat in the stands

If there needs to be segregation I'd be all for it.

I don't think that's the case right now.

I think it'd be a dark day for the GAA of it ever was needed.
