Street brawl or football?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Seems clear Dublin were knocked off their stride by the brawl in the tunnel and with Keegan hauling down Connolly behind the play after less than 10 minutes. MacAuley should have gone twice.
A hard physical game is one thing destroying a final with a series of thinly disguised street fights allowed by a clueless set of officials is another thing and a real pity.
Couple that with playing on a skating rink made for soft shoe American football leading to farcical scores and wild ill considered Hail Mary kicks is threatening to make a farce of the whole occasion.
All this disguised by fanciful media hype. Is the media the only message here? Is it media that now obscures all the defects and media rather than merit that decides Croke Park matches?
GAA needs to get organised take control of the game and demand consistency of treatment and reffing or It will lose all those brilliant minors who played the only real football match yesterday

I wouldn't blame the ref. Games between the Dubs and Mayo are always extremely difficult to ref. There is a bite there that does not exist between any other two counties. For some reason the Dubs let Mayo get under their skin and Mayo know this. The league game in Castlebar in February, Last years two semi-finals. 2013 all Ireland final. 2012 semi final. 2006.

No doubt Mayo will come to the replay with some sort of a wind-up tactic again. The Dubs have to rise above this.

How inconsiderate of Mayo not to stand back and let those Dublin choirboys play the type of football they are used to. Were you expecting our lads to stand back and applaud as Diarmuid kicked (unhindered) points off left and right foot. As for mutterings about brawls, dark arts and cynicism, it's always the other team and not our perfect gentlemen who are at fault. The proud mother syndrome!

Mayo's very own John Casey has reported the following about the 'brawl'. So yeah, in this instance it does look like it was the 'other team' who were at fault.

"There was skelping in the tunnel," he said. "I had a bird's eye view of it and I am still shaking after it."

"Mayo waited purposefully for five minutes because they basically wanted to let Dublin know they mean business today," said Casey. "There were fracas in the tunnel, players going for each other."

"I am not going to tell you a lie, I was scared down there. There were fellas going hammer and tongs at each other. It was pure purposefully timed by Mayo to try and disrupt the Dublin juggernaut," said Casey.

"Aidan O'Shea ploughed through the middle of the Dublin players... Cillian O'Connor up-scuttled and hit a few fellas."

Relax the cax. I haven't criticised anyone. Just calling it as I see it. You are still fired up from yesterday. Relax man. Argue or disagree with what I am saying here if you want but don't go on the attack on things you think I am saying. Take it easy.

But weren't Dublin supposed to be out before Mayo? Weren't the Dubs late? I'm not sure we are getting the full story there.

Casey is being ridiculed now for his account of that

also, the schedule was printed in the program, Dublin were due out first.

Not us moaning, it was a Tyrone poster, after 61 years you are entitled to do anything to win Sam.

Yeah fair enough but it's the whole 'Dubs rising above this' high moral ground attitude that I have a problem with. Just because the Dubs play lovely football, when they are let, doesn't mean they don't get down and dirty with the best of them. Our lads are no angels but then neither are the Dubs. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous.

This poor John Casey lad seems to be in a bad way about the whole thing haha

I don't think any Dubs have a problem with getting down in dirty. We'd prefer to play football and I'd prefer if we rose above Mayo's wish for a physical battle however. I felt we let you get under our skin which was a disadvantage to us.

Cue the thumbs down. Boring....

This is my view of it too. Dublin were about 5 minutes late coming out compared to their scheduled time per the program. Mayo were scheduled out 2 minutes after Dublin's original time. Therefore I would assume they left the dressing room at their allotted time but were then told to hold on in the tunnel until Dublin went on to the pitch first.

Obviously that is a lot of conjecture on my part there but would seem a lot more logical/likely an explanation than the one saying Mayo waited in the tunnel for Dublin in order to get in their faces or unnerve them or whatever.

Obviously things got a bit tasty then! I just hope that poor man has stopped shaking from the whole ordeal!

He played in that frame of mind on Darren Fay in 1996 too!! After staring throughout the campaign Mayo got nothing out of him and it was a reason why they didn't win the all-ireland then. James Horan carried all the scoring burden.

Agreed. It's all bull at the end of the day and a team can't be focused on the game if their minds are on giving lads digs. As a Laois man Pillar teams were unbearable. Mark Vaughan putting fingers in players faces when he scored etc.

Pat Gilroy and Jim Gavin knocked all that stuff on the head. Very fair interview from Gavin post match. Rochford too.
