GAA cliches

"The Dark Arts" is fast becoming the most popular GAA cliché (that has a nice ring to it).

As for the "blanket defence" this year's championship hopefully may see the phrase start to lose relevance going forward.

One that i find ridiculous is co-commentator, telling us that a player 'caressed' the ball beautifully over the bar. This is usually used when a ball is hit over the bar on the right hand side of the pitch with the inside of the left foot ala Diarmuid Connolly's last point in the semi against Kerry. The aforementioned co-commentator feels he has to stamp ever passage of play with his 'beautiful' figurative verbosity.

That's Galway or Mayo when the other finds any success!

He took the sensible option or he used his experience there and took his point.

Usually said after a player has blazed a glorious goal chance over the bar.

The sensible option would have been to roll the ball past the keeper into the net rather than closing your eyes, kicking the ball as hard as you can and hoping for the best.

"Whoever wants it more at the end of the day will win" (the most banal line in pre-match analysis)

"That's Kilkinny for ya, Gir" (Cyril Farrell whenever Kilkenny score a goal against the run of play)

"He's a good club player" (not good enough for the county team)

"He has a younger brother who's better than him" (said about any star minor player. Half the time they probably don't even have a brother)

"They have a good minor team this year" (the person saying it usually doesn't have the slightest clue whether they have a good minor team or not, it just gives the pretence of knowing what he's talking about - and the other person is unlikely to contradict him as he doesn't know either)
