Is Meath now becoming a hurling county?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

with meath winning the christy ring and u21 all ireland yesterday, could we be seeing hurling as the future dominant game in meath?

can they become like dublin hurlers if funded to the same extent.? there are a lot of people in meath who seem to be very disillusioned by the footballers and many who genuinely dont like football at all. i notice in the last few years some meath people love sticking the boot into the county footballers so maybe there is not any real hunger or interest in football improving in meath perhaps it is time to start concentrating on the hurling team and funding it better etc.

is the apathy among meath people in regards to football permanent? i thimk we can make great strides fairly quickly in hurling and get to offaly/laois/wexford standard but after that it will be tough, buts prob more realistic than trying to put new life into the dead duck that is meath football

Meath have about 20 adult hurling clubs. Mayo have 4. Westmeath have 14.

Nope hurling will always be second in Meath, here is a little statistic, more Meath supporters attended the Meath v dubs Meath v Louth football matches than went to watch the Christy ring final, Its just not in majority dna. Add to that the huge buzz and excitement (I have not seen it like this since Boylan era) with the appointment of Andy McEntee . And hurling will take a back seat, it would be nice to both doing well, but I can see Andy guiding a very talented (even if mismanaged lately) young team to at least div 1 probably this year but if not next for sure. In players like keoghan, Menton, mcgill, Harnan, Rooney, Gillespie, O'Sullivan, Reilly, McMahon, most counties would give their left arm to have them, knowing they have massively under achieved, right manager, brought 4/5 ranked team in Dublin to all ire glory , took most of current Meath panel to all ire minor final, Meath will be one hell of a team when Andy gets them in full flow. I firmly believe we have the best football manager in country, and the players know this too. The excitement is unreal, as I said best of luck to the hurlers , but lets have a look at this thread in 12 months time.

how the hell can Meath, or any other county, be funded to the same extent that Dublin are?

The main reason you think their hurling exploits make hurling in Meath comparible to football is the fact that Dublin's funding has left Meath football in its dust.

I think they are - not doing much in football and haven't done in a while. No underage worth talking about and their hurlers seem to be on an upward spiral. The most famous men they have now in football are their referees or should I say infamous?

One swallow doesn't make a summer. Westmeath's achievements in hurling in the last 10 years or so are more numerous and impressive then Meath's but you wouldn't hear anyone claiming hurling is now top dog in Westmeath.

I can't think of a significant metric where hurling beats football in Meath.

Playing numbers
No clubs
Probability of winning AI
Probability of winning Leinster
Number of fans going to games
Historical success
Priority given by county board

All these are in favour of football in Meath it will be quite a while before I can see any of them changing.

So no Meath is still very much a football county.

westmeath football is in div 4? surely westmeath hurlers are operating at a higher level and id count westmeath as more hurling than football.

on anoother point i havent heard anyone being excited b mcentee taking over, gerry isnt liked by hurling clubs after he said to burn all the hurleys, a good portion of these people would love to see him fail. dont see how we can be excited by meath football, our underage is record is terrible, no leinster minor since 2008 and no u-21 since 2001, where is the future there? were a mid table div 2 team and will be for years to come. throw money at hurling and see what happens thats my thinking

Well first off, last year lost out on promotion die to he's to head rule with Roscommon, year before lost out on promotion to Donegal with very late dubious free to draw match. Hardly what you would call mid division 2, and all this with a poor enough management, you could throw as much money as you like at Meath hurling, it wont make them any better against the Kilkenny, Clare, dubs, tipps, galways, Waterford Wexford or even the offaly and Westmeath who would all convincingly beat us. We will never be a top hurling county, we have 7 all ire, 20+ Leinster, leagues, etc etc. In senior hurling. If the basis for your arguments is the Christy ring, Meath football won the O'Byrne cup, which would be on a par with ring as iys secondary comp.
Andy McEntee will be a huge success, btw Andy never said anything about hurling,

Hurlers would be ranked higher than the footballers this year anyways...hurlers would be ranked 13/14....footballers would struggle to be make the top 16,

Maybe a once off but shows how far footballers have fallen and the hurlers have risen .

When Eamon Cregan & Michael Duignan were involved with the Meath hurlers a number of years ago they were very competitive against many of those teams you named in both league & championship. Nicky Horan, Mickey Cole & Pat Potterton were all top class hurlers.

Club hurling in meath is very strong, alot stronger than it is in my own county. i can see hurling going from strength to strength in meath and who knows, if their footballers continue to strugggle, hurling may become top dog
