Dual counties - The way forward?

(Oldest Posts First)

Clare, Tipperary, Galway still have teams left in both codes while Kerry, Cork and Dublin could well be regarded as strong dual counties with teams in Div. 1 of both codes. Westmeath and Wexford could also be regarded as dual counties given their league and championship performances.

Thus only Tyrone, Donegal, Waterford, Mayo and Kilkenny remain as 'single code county' teams.

Dual counties seem to have the edge which is very interesting and seems to go against conventional wisdom.

Cork footballers are in Division 2 next year. Only Kerry and Dublin Region will start the year with the possibility of winning Division 1 in both football and hurling.

The way forward....maybe . But certainly not the way backwards as many would have you believe. Have to say Its a proud evening for a Clareman being in quarter finals in both codes, even if it only lasts 24 hours.

We should look within counties to see how 'dual' they are. Cork City and the area around it has a few clubs that give close to equal consideration to both sports (generally speaking as it may vary from year to year depending on success). There are large parts of Cork where there is almost none of one of the sports. We are considered dual as we have plenty of resources/clubs. I would say there are only a few areas in the country that are genuinely dual. The achievements of Slaughtneil, Cratloe, Loughmore Castleiney in recent times is quite special. This is truly dual.
