I've waiting until Wednesday to comment on a very serious incident(s) on Sunday. I believe there was serious crowd congestion on Sunday in Clones, added to the heat we were very lucky that nobody was serious injured. At the conclusion of the the Ulster Final the crowd started to leave the O'Duffy Terrace and the Hill, ( luckily there were thousands on the pitch). But there was no movement, instead people got caught in a bottle-neck- the crowd getting bigger and bigger on the road, but no movement. There was panic and it was frightening if you had small children. Some 20 minutes later when eventually we started to move - we realised that cars were permitted to drive up the hill towards the ground, thereby decreasing the capacity for the crowd/supporters to move through..... cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1676 - 20/07/2016 13:08:23 1886944 Link 0 |
Yes they are paid.

I had exited the ground in the other direction, so wasn't aware of the crush until I was told about this yesterday. The person who told me had waited until after the presentation, so you would've thought that congestion may have eased by then. She said that it was an extremely serious scene, and that people around her were fainting. She was genuinely frightened. Thomas Clarke (Tyrone) - Posts: 1002 - 20/07/2016 13:29:42 1886966 Link 0 |
No need for them. We don't have police in any grounds in the north and ive never had an issue. Always thought it was strange seeing guards on the hill dealing with trouble and wondering would there be any if they weren't there. I wasn't there but have experienced similar before and usually the police are not to blame. Its the layout of the ground and exits. They don't have issues in stadiums that hold 100k plus so clones should have no excuses DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 20/07/2016 21:44:48 1887290 Link 1 |
True, but there's a reason why they close jones Rd/ clonliffe Rd whenever there's a match played in Croke park, I think the question is why were adjoining streets to the stadium in Clones not closed to traffic?

The gardai inside the stadium in Croke Park are paid by the GAA and those working outside the grounds are paid by the state. I presume the same logic applies to the other grounds.

Not 100% sure about clones but in breffni the same guards do both the traffic out the road and then make their way into the stadium. They then leave as the fans leave

We left from the hill straight after the match to walk towards supervalue. When passing the church quite of few cars pulled out to go down the road which I thought was madness considering the road was jammed packed with people. it's not about crowd trouble, it's about crowd management. A very serious issue. If you don't have proper crowd management the consequences can be very serious. It is up to the organisers (in this case the ulster council ) to ensure that proper crowd management policies are in place. In Clones on Sunday this was not the case. A review of the situation needs to be undertaken and the Garda need to be involved because clearly something went badly wrong.
