Football's alive again

(Oldest Posts First)

Some very negative people on here saying the game is dead, bring back the good old days, its just defensive football now blah blah blah.

It's like hearing 6 year olds complain not knowing why they are doing it and can't back it up with reason but because their friends are complaining as well they join in to feel part of the crowd.

Here is what negative football has produced this year so fare in each province:

Ulster 33.5 points per game

Munster 38.2 points per game

Leinster 35.6 points per game

Connacht 34 points per game

In the qualifiers the average per game has been 32.7

We have had shocks and upsets, hammerings and close calls, dives and handbags, big crowds and small, the usual poor and bad refs (depending if your team won)

How is the game dead or dying? I just don't understand for one.

Of course football is alive. There have only ever been a few teams at any given stage capable of winning an All Ireland.
Ulster and Connacht are competitive. Munster has always been a two horse race but TIpp and now Clare are making huge strides.
Leinster teams need to get their house in order but that can only be done from within their own borders.

We have potentially some massive games coming up over the next month.

You fail to realise that there is more ot the game than scoring and although to scoring is fine (as was aknowledged in other threads) the build up part to the scoring is very tedious.

That is what needs to be fixed.

There is more to the game than watching a players pop the ball over the bar.

The avergae game of football is nowhere near as good as it should be.

Why do people assume that because there are loads of scores it must be entertaining?

There is often on average close to 200 points scored in a basketball game but its still boring as hell to watch.

Nice to see some agree and can be positive but some will never be happy not having the game played as they fondly remember it (even if those memories are jaded). Hate to say it but it's not going back so adapt or die as they say. If the people don't like it they won't watch it you'd assume but viewing figures are high both at the games and on TV.

Every game can be improved. I think there's not enough reward for attacking play so some teams have resorted to a dour-looking defensive game. There are higher average scores because players are fitter and faster and in some cases more skilful. The 4 minute mile and 10 second barriers were broken as athletes got fitter and faster helped by newer training methods and technology so that's partly why we have higher scores.

Have we greater or lesser deficits between game winners and losers though. All out attacking football is grand but I'd rather eatch a defensive Ulster final that we got yesterday over the whuppings in Munster, Leinster and Connaught. The standard at the top has greatly increased but so has the gap to the so-called lesser counties.

DCFC what I want to know is, did you stay in bed or are you still getting a drenching from those water jets?!

Good post and agree with most of it but shouldn't the fitness improve defenders at the same rate keeping scores at the same level?

I think the one area we have really lost out on and it may just be coincidence is midfield. In a few years we might see another 10 greats come through and really dominate

And that is what will happen.

There have never been as many people complaining about the game (people who actually love the game) and people who don't like it think it's rubbish.

Of course in the GAA's world it seems to be much better to wait until their are empty stands to make a change instead of being proactive and making a change before their is a fall of in interest.
