The match was fixed for 3.30pm with the Ireland v Belgium game not over 3.50pm.I'm sure many Laois GAA folk are soccer fans, also, and had made other plans some time ago.The Laois game was on tv as well so that didn't help.

As one of the few Laois people who were at the game I have to say there was a much bigger crowd than I expected. That is thanks to a big travelling support for Armagh who I have to say did their county proud. After coming from a low ebb same as us they travelled down in droves and really got behind the team.

If we were on boycott could you really blame us though? Game scheduled at the exact same time as probably Irelands biggest game in 14 years. Wouldnt happen if Dublin were playing!

You can laugh as much as you like, but this is all part of the worrying future for gaelic games. Interest in the games is dying.

Not really
laois have had that small support for a number of years. The boycott thing was a smokescreen that's why I laughed
as I said on here before the Dublin match
That laois played Wicklow at home as part of a double header with louth v carlow and the overall attendance was only 4,500 with laois not even having the largest contingent there so it no surprise they didn't travel to nowlan park or turnout for a qualifier at home.

Haha.

That's right. Nosebleeds all over the place if we went into them.

Sure it was beyond ludicrous to put the Laois v Armagh up against our biggest soccer match in a decade
Is it any wonder Laois fans are disillusioned with the suits up in croke park.
No matter who was playing up against the National team the stadium would have been empty
People will vote with their feet when they are being messed around.
The players would have wanted to watch the match too. It could have been played later or on a Sunday.

Hill,
I'd agree the turnouts in those games were poor for Laois,
but Irrelevant of the attendances it was a f..k up.
Laois should of had the opportunity to play Dublin at home. They would have had an opportunity to get the neutral support out as well. Get kids at the game to see the Dubs as much as Laois. Laois are promoting football and hurling in a small county.
GAA should have rewarded them , instead of punishing them.
Off course if your county is at a low ebb and playing poorly support will be low, surely the Gaa should be giving counties in trouble a lift , not pushing them down further. Laois having a home game against us would have been a nice lift.
Im glad they got through on Saturday , because at times they played decent against us.

ah i have nothing against laois often had some great players i enjoyed watching in the past
like leo turley, mick lawlor, hughie emerson to name just a few
but the idea of a boycott is far fetched they werent turning out for games anyway
yeah we all know the game with ourselves should have been in portlaoise
every dub would have rathered that travelling wise too
but i dont think you would have got much more laois regardless of venue
i have bee down there for a league match few years back on a wet saturday night
and must have been 5 thousand dubs and about 50 laois
so its nothing new is the point

Hill, I'm guessing that league match was when we were both in division 1?
I can guarantee you there were far more than 50 Laois fans at that game. I know I went with around 10 and I cant imagine we accounted for 1/5 of the Laois crowd!
Obviously there was far more Dubs there, but there would be a good Laois following there as the fact it was the Dublin in our own backyard would have made it a draw for a lot of people who wouldnt have went otherwise.

We wouldnt have great support these days anyway, I acknowledge that, but it doesnt help when the powers that be seem intent on shafting you every second weekend!

yeah it was a division 1 game.
i didnt mean it literally now 50 probably a handfull more haha
yeah but going by the wicklow game which was in portlaoise and a game you would be favourites for
the crowd hasnt changed that much for the dublin and armagh games like not dramatically anyway.

I noticed this saturday and made enquiries. I was assured by people in the know that one was a blood sub and that laois okayed sub 7 with 4th official

I was at the match and did not see any temporary subs come on. On saying that the officials made a right mess of an earlier substitution so they may well have told Laois to go ahead.

Don't really fancy another match this year though!

Blood subs do not count so they will be ok
