A Huge Oportunity missed by GAA

(Oldest Posts First)

Was just looking at the division finals in crok park at the weekend and i couldnt but feel how these finals could have been a great opportunity for being serious chamionship games. By just ever so slightly adjusting the league structure, If the top 2 in each divsion 2,3 and 4 went to a final where just one team was promoted these games would have taken on the significance of serious championship games instead of the dead rubbers they were. relegation could be just one team down maybe a relegation play off to make sure there wernt too many dead rubber games, relegation play off between the bottom two, this would be a huge game also.
but the real win would be the divisional finals for promotion, i guaruntee there would have been over 20k in croker on saturday. kildare and clare would have brought a huge amount of fans for this as would tyrone and cavan fans. i definitly think if the GAA were to go down this road they would never look back. promotion to div 1 is a prize only bettered by a provncial title

disagree completely. It is either a league or it's not. how would you feel if your team won all their games in the league and were then beaten by the second placed team who just happened to get lucky on the day or managed to peak at the right time. It would make the rest of the league matches irrelevant. why can people not get their heads around the concept of a league. there should never be "league finals" The team that finishes first should win it and that is that. luckily yesterday that is what happened in Div 1 so the records will be correct.

well we all know the GAA dont really care for that, the only thing they care aboutis getting money in the greasy till, thats why im surprised they dont change the structure to get more people in the gates. if the GAA were into fairness and equality sure we should go back to the League when it was a trophy everyoe could have a go at winning, was this the way it was pre 2000? i remember westmeath getting to the semi final in 1994 coming from div 4 and armagh i think came from div 3 to the finaal. can anyone tell me how exactly the legue worked thos years?

Back then the top 4 teams in division one, the top two teams in division 2, and the top team in division 3 and 4 all made it to the quarter finals.
