Only one Division 1 team, what has gone wrong for Munster?

Usually there's 2. Before this season how many Connaught sides were there!?

Jasus, Leinster and Munster, joint worse provinces.

;-)

I agree. I saw cork in ballyshannon and they looked awful. I am not sure what is wrong down there. Division 2 might suit them to get their mojo back.

Congrats to clare on their promotion.

In the year of the rising, should we not be spelling this Connacht?

In fairness there are only 6 counties in munster..

Clare are now in dv2 so well done to them.Leinster(sadly) is the weakest province..

All of the provinces are uneven and have massive gaps between the best and worst. All of the provinces contain only (at most) really genuine All Ireland contender. Munster is no different to the others.

Sad to see the chronic demise and return to the doldrums for limerick football :(

Cork got 6 points - normally would be enough to stay up - Armagh got 6pts too, but it was the Roscommon big win which messed up their scoring average, like Cavan hammered us, our one big defeat

Munster have only one Division 1 county - seems not a big deal as Clare got promoted to Div 2 which is a big story.... Tipp are in Div 3 and will be fancied for promotion next yr. This post would have been correct 20yrs ago but both Tipp and Clare are making strides while Cork and Kerry will have a big run in the championship

I know Liam and the worst part is we have enough good footballers in the county to be a solid division 2 team but most of them prefer soccer and rugby. Geroid hegarty and will o donoghue who would make a quality midfield pairing would rather sit on the hurlers bench (although they potentially have bright futures). At least they have set up a quality academy in the last couple of years so hopefully brighter times ahead!

Ya I'd echo what Liam has said. Very sad to see Limerick go so far backwards.

Only 6-7 years ago a Cork side scrapped passed them by the skin of their teeth in the Munster final and they really should have taken us for a title around 2004-2005.

Hope they can re-emerge again soon.

good point Benny,

But bar dublin and kerry, there is no all ireland winner for the foreseeable future so you if you exclude them and look at the field, of all the provinces I would say that munster is weakest. (If you disqualify new york and london from connaught for the sake of this argument).

Tipp, limerick and waterford are not where they need to be to challenge for any honours this year. (Provincial or back door).
Claire and cork could do something but on the last few months form, you would say that cork are the worst I remember them.

I could go on about the other counties, but it is pointless. 4 ulster teams in division one next year, 1 munster, 1 leinster and 2 connaught is a good enough yardstick to where things are at. There is no way an ulster county will win sam this year nor a connaught one. (Dublin and kerry are the only game in town for that).

Kerry's route to the last 8 every year is simply so unfair , particularly when competed to what Ulster sides face .

The one year we got an easy draw (2014 ) we reached the final .

We could rest players etc and peak for August. Anyone that plays football will know how important that is .

Tyrone will have to go to Derry ( D2) , then probably Cavan ( D1) and then probably us or Monaghan ( D1) just to to with the province . Absolutly unfair .

Our run last year just to the make the final was ridiculous .

It is Kerry's fault - of course it's not .

GAA HQ or congress need to make changes.

Another point - it's the sum of all it's parts not just who can win Sam. The average of Ulster would hammer Munster .

Ps : Kerry look really good at the moment .

Maybe Kerry should compete in the Ulster championship?
Sure why not get rid of the munster championship altogether?
Then people would stop cribbing!!

Before this year I'd have considered that the Dubs and my own county had the least dangerous routes to the last 8, but now Kerry look to have the best advantage. Cork's biggest issue for a few years has been midfield and morale seems all over the shop. If they can fix midfield the spirit will return. Doesn't look like it's likely to be this year though.

Tipperary are the same as Limerick good footballers but a lot of the lads choose to sit on the hurlers bench. 3 players who would have made a difference have only seen 2 minutes of game time this year and that was yesterday when Stephen O'Brien came on. His not even close to the starting 15 and should have been culled with Seamus Kennedy last week.
Unfortunately that is the GAA world we live in lads will try and make the hurling panel when they are clearly better footballers.
I guess same can be said for other counties where its the opposite. Aidan Walsh of Cork is one such example far better hurler than a footballer in my opinion.

On a side note congratulations to Clare footballers they have really put in hard work over the past 24 months. Plus their underage set up is up there with the best in the country. Should have beaten Tipp in the Munster minor semi last year in Thurles but inexperience cost them when Tipp 2 points down scored 3 in 2 minutes to win the game. From what I know lot of them lads are still underage again for minor this year and wont be too far off a Munster final. Tipp have been there before in Div 2 and didn't perform so lets hope Clare put it up to some of the bigger teams there. Will be some novel league games when they play the likes of Galway & Meath.

However I do fear for them in the final v Kildare they may get a hammering but the hard work is done and promotion richly deserved.
