'Cruyff like' GAA moments

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

As a soccer legend passes Sports Joe did a piece earlier about iconic GAA moments that could be compared to Cruyff's famous turn in the world cup. I can't find the link but some that were amongst the mentioned moments were Joe Canning's back hand pass, Diarmuid O'Sullivan's shoulder against Limerick and Maurice Fitz's sideline point. I'm sure we all have witnessed some of our own, feel free to share them.

I remember being at the hurling semi in 97 and watching DJ Carey on one of his famous solos through a formidable Clare defence in their prime but they still couldn't cope with his speed skill and finishing. Clare did win the game but that move was just typical of DJ, when he took a notion to go on one of those solos he was nearly unstoppable, defenders struggled to get near him and you knew you were witnessing a legend at work.

Mugsy's goal v Dublin in 2005. That'll be remembered for many a day

Michael Donnellan's run in the first half of the 1998 football final. Poetry in motion.

You mean Mugsy's great goal where he fouled (showed) the ball twice :D

Connolly's goal V Castlebar

I'm guessing that post was half in jest but I'm 99% certain the Mulligan dummies were legit. Don't think showing the ball is actually a foul!

Perfect example, i definately would include Shane Walsh s point v Tippereary in the football qualifiers a few years ago. Pure skill from a gifted player!

Mugsys goal was a technical foul I do believe!

In reality go see Joe Canning live and you always see some mesmerising moments. Genius.

Mugsy's goal broke no rules. One of the best ever!

Too many to mention, Canning last Sunday - three pieces of magic in ine game! Fantastic! His first half goal to the roof of the nest, his second half point from play and his sideline over the bar.... A joy to watch and all. In one game!

Canavan's precise goal against Keery right into the corner of the net. Brilliant. Sheehan's point into the gale 2 or 3 weeks ago- again brilliant. Every week we have magnificent memories being given to us by our great player. Very hard to narrow. Them down to one or two...

Ha ha lads, it was a foul back in the day, not sure whether it was illegal at the time of the game in question, of course it was a great goal but it was against us so I'm trying to 'dirty' it :D

Anyway, Connolly's goal V Castlebar is the best mentioned so far :)

Kevin Broderick's wonder point for Galway against Tipperary -- I think it was in 2001. Soloed with the sliotar, was confronted by a Tipp defender in his path, looped the sliotar over the defender's head and ran around him and sliotar landed on his hurley as he went past. Then scored a point off his Hurley in the same action. Amazing. Well worth viewing if you haven't seen it.

Maurice Fitz's point in Thurles against us stands out, as does Connolly's goal for Vincents against Castlebar a couple of years ago.

that was 2005 semi vs Kilkenny PoolSturgeon. He couldn't have asked for a more formidable back line to be trying that on but what a piece of skill it was, definitely up there.

I wince ever time i see that Mulligan goal.Brutal defending. It is embarrassing to watch Paul Casey falling for his second dummy.
Some of my most memorable GAA moments have been
1 M Fitz last-gasp point from out on the sideline to break Dublin hearts.
2 J Fenton's 45 yard wonder goal from a ground stroke. Not bad for a 10 year to see live.Still the best hurling goal i've ever seen
3 K Broderick slaloming through the Tipp defense and lobbing a hapless defender.Happened to be at this game also.
4 N English kicking a goal past Ger Cunningham in '87 Munster final in Thurles.Perfectly side-footed into the corner.Tipp official in suit jumps ten foot high beside the goal as Killinan End erupts.
5 B Dooher's brilliant point v Kerry in 2008 final. He broke a few hard tackles running down the Cusack Stand sideline and finished in style into the Hill.Uplifting the team and crowd.
So many more to mention.

Poolsturgeon t hat Broderick point was great but it was against Kilkenny in the 2001 semi.
Canning's 'back handpass' is definitely a Cryuff turn like moment , I think his goal against the Cats in the Leinster final last year will also be remembered.
In football that Maurice Fitzgerald equalising point against us in Thurles is such a moment, so too was Jimmy keaveney's outrageous goal against Armagh in 77.

Canavan's goal against Kerry. Eye of the needle pinpoint precision, best goal ever seen at Croke Park. Nicky English's goal against Antrim in the 89 final, class.

Was that Kevin Broderick point not in 2001? I was at that game and remember a piece of magic from Broderick that day..perhaps he did something similar in 2005. I can't recall though.
