Has Minister Kelly hit on the right way to reform the All-Ireland c'ships. The most recent proposal is to move part of Roscommon, part of the traditional catchment areas of the St. Brigid's and Clan na Gaelic GAA clubs, into Westmeath. If this approach was taken throughout the country it could change the face of the All-I without the need to move whole counties around the provinces. A creative mind could hand pick traditional strongholds of the GAA and simply pull them into the nearest town over the county boundary. There is fantastic room for fun and change here. Must have a look at getting B'dereen, Ballygar, Lanes borough and Carrick-on-Shannon into Ros to start with neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 20/01/2016 19:19:07 1818088 Link 0 |
I don't get the concern about this. It's not like those clubs would be obliged to join Westmeath. None of the 6 counties up north exist in an administrative sense, but that hasnt made the county boundaries change from the original 6. Same story with Dublin, there's no single Dublin authority, but that doesn't mean Dublin are obliged to split into 4 different county boards. There is discussion at the moment about bringing all the housing estates in the Meath part of Drogheda into County Louth. This would also include the Drogheda retail park whichbiggest is just over the border in Meath .The biggest housing estate in Drogheda is Grange Rath and this is in Meath. This will happen because they have no political clot, if a proposal of putting all of west Dublin into Kildare and Meath there would be uproar, we have no say in this part of the country riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 21/01/2016 15:02:48 1818312 Link 0 |
Would Westmeath allow the likes of Kinnegad to be transferred into Meath? valley84 (Westmeath) - Posts: 1890 - 21/01/2016 16:48:00 1818347 Link 0 |
This would mean Roscommon losing a ninth of its population of what is already the fifth smallest population county in the republic. It would also lose a third of its business rates for the entire county which is why Westmeath wants it. This would financially cripple Roscommon in what is the ninth biggest in geographical size county in the republic. ros1 (Roscommon) - Posts: 1211 - 22/01/2016 21:39:42 1818607 Link 0 |
