Longford v Dublin

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

First off yeah its only O'Byrne cup but well done to Longford. This I think proves that dubs out of home territory be it Parnell or croke park are not as good as they are there. I want the GAA to fix Leinster semi finals in portlaoise.

What type of team had Dublin out? It's a pre season game that's means nothing. Roscommon beat Mayo too today but results in January mean nothing.

This game just proves that if they played in Longford last summer the result would have been different and Longford maybe would have went on to win the all Ireland!!

@ yew_tree - The Dubs I think had 7 of the All-ireland team out. Longford in Pearse Park are a handful for anyone. Sure it's not championship, but give credit where it's due.

Considering longford were missing mickey Quinn and Kavanagh that was a great result for them. I think Longford only had one of their county champions on the starting 15 too. A few weeks back their manager said up to 40% of the players called up didn't go forward for the panel. Fantastic result for them.

Was at the game today and have to say both sides have us a good game considering the conditions. Was speaking with a few Dublin supporters who were both disappointed but respectful. This is the equivalent of Lucan with its population similiar to that of longford playing the dubs. Yes it's Jan and yes it's the I Byrne cup but still a great boost for longford heading into the league. These players and players from similiar counties are the heart and soul of the game as they give the same commitment for very little reward. Well done to them. A win against the all Ireland champions is a great boost at any time.

I see the dubs getting touchy about my post, first off it is great for Longford, but the bigger picture is the bs spouted by some dubs that croke park doesn't make a difference is just that, bs. Too bloody right it does. And more and more dubs are realising this and tbh it would be lot harder to win, and cricket scorers like Las season wouldn't happen, not saying Dublin still wouldn't win, but at least its more competition. The gaa are trying to stop div 4 teams playing in qualifier, perhaps closing up croke park until first week in July is answer???

We rarely ever win the o Byrne cup never mind back to back in it. Seven of last years team was starting but last year was last year I never get why people reference a previous year team like nothing changes. gavin never keeps same team and just look at the list of players both sides hadnt playing today. Also knew someone would bring tge away from dublin malarky up haha clutching at straws or what lads. Well done longford .

Who's getting touchy, I'm delighted for Longford, they need wins like that. As for the Croke Park issue, I agree, we would not win by the cricket scores that we rack up in HQ! A bit of slagging off the Royal is par for the course, not touchy.

Well done Longford,
A lot of Senior Dublin players just getting back into it , but that team should have been good enough.
Either way good boost for Longford lads to beat the AllIreland Champs.

I agree that Dublin should be taken out of croke park more regularly as it is the national stadium of the gaa and not a county ground. However they are the best team in the country and play an attractive brand of football to go with it. I think it's shameful that the gaa are actually considering excluding div 4 teams from the all Ireland series. Being a supporter of a so called weaker county and knowing some of the players opinions this is not the answer to make games and teams more competitive in my opinion. All this will do is cause club players within these counties to be disinterested in playing for their county. The qualifiers were brought in originally to bring on these counties yet it actually gives the competitive sides another crack of the whip if they are caught on the hop. Div 1 and 2 sides should be fixed away against div 3 or 4 sides. This makes it competitive. There are numerous other options open to the gaa to try first before they resign the weaker counties to the scrap heap with proposals like this. However these options could result in a small loss of revenue!!

Hill16 I'm afraid I is you that is deluded saying playing every game In Dublin doesn't make a difference, honesty do you really expect people do believe that nonsense?
Dublin are a great team, and guess what id still bank on them winning all Ireland no matter where they play, they just wouldn't win with 20 plus point to spare, you have nothing to fear coming down the country and certainly nothing to fear playing your home league matches in Parnell.

Royal Dunne - I think for the first time ever I actually agree with you . TBF , I think most Dubs would agree that home advantage is huge and anyone who plays football or any sport would agree .

Like you Royal Dunne , I think Dublin are the best side in the land however they wouldn't be destroying sides by 20+ points in say Navan or Pearse Park .

On another note , a sell out in June or July in a packed Longford or Tullamore would be a great advertisement for the game . To be fair , the Dubs love to travel and get away for the day so it's not their fault . Well done Longford . Any win is a good win.

Royaldunne, this has been done to death, off course Dublin have an advantage over weaker counties if we are playing them in Croker.
All Dubs want to be out of Croker for Leinster championship or whatever games are deemed to be played outside croker.
Whether we have an advantage or other teams use it to their advantage in latter stages of All Ireland series is another arguement, I'm talking about the top teams. But definetly it makes scorelines bigger in early rounds.

Athacliatha and rightstuff. That's all I am saying, look Dublin would still win Leinster even if they never played one game in croker , but those games would be tighter, better for dubs and other counties, also better advertisement for our game.
And I know vast majority of dubs would prefer to play more games outside croker and only love to travel.
My argument isn't with Dublin or their supporters, it's with GAA and the way they wont address the problem, rather they bring back the tommy murphy cup (stupidity in all its glory) taking q financial hit is all that would happen
