County boards

(Oldest Posts First)

We all have them and some are better than others.
Considering recent events in Galway and Offaly they seem to have a knack of making a bags of things if at all possible. Now not all are like this so just wondering what your take is on your county board and they do their job.

From what I've seen, everyone loves playing the poor mouth when it comes to county boards. Every county (bar maybe Dublin) reckons they have the worst county board in Ireland. It's like the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch from Monty Python. "Our county board made a hames of buiding a stadium" "You think that's bad?, our county board held the 1997 senior hurling final last month!" "That's nothing, our county board spend €56'000 a month on haircuts for themselves" etc.

I think they're an easy target for disgruntled supporters. It's far easier to blame a (fairly anonymous) county board for your county's failing than players/managers/yourself

Will take the 5th on this one. All I can say is let's hope there is a better vision for Antrim after this years convention.

I thought Fermanaghs was bad but this current Antrim CB must be the worst board in the history of the GAA.

Would love to know how some of the decisions that are made by some of these boards are reached.OK,I presume there is some form of voting system observed but you would have to ask do they have a clue at all or is there much though given to what is going on within their county.Politics I'm sure comes into play a fair bit too but Antrim ,Cork,Galway Laois and Offaly to name but a few seem to have had their fair share of silly carry on to deal with of recent times.

Well in Westmeath you have the situation where the top table tried to force the minor hurling to be played on the same day as the senior hurling final, despite the same two clubs being involved in both games and both clubs objecting to this. The board insisted they were in the right as it had been agreed at the county convention the previous winter. Both teams failed to turn up. it subsequently emerged the board had no authority to fix the minor game with the senior game.
minor b final still hasn't been played in the county
then you have the U21 football final farce. game fixed for 3pm last week. Players had booked time off work, organised schedules, county board changed time to 5pm. Neither team turned up.
county minor hurling - hurlers were entered in the A competition and B competitions. They beat Wexford in the A competition and lost the leinster semi final. county board forgot to tell the management about the B and then when the B fixture came round the county board refused to let a team go and represent the county, even a team of players who didn't play A hurling.
minor hurling two years ago - uproar over the players swapping shirts after a game and the boards insistence that the shirts would be returned and the young lads punished.
minor hurling the previous year. following an incident at a challenge match up in Armagh, where one or two players entered another dressing room and took a few items belonging to another team the county board decided to punish the whole squad and dissolved the squad
county board announced a 'family weekend pass' ticket last year apparently for admittance to all games over a weekend. people went into the offices during the week to buy one, only to be told they don't actually exist. seriously.
notice a pattern here?

If that is the case Valley84 then it does seem like complete incompetence and disrespect on behalf of county board.
Players deserve far better than this considering the effort on their part.I think a lot of these boards are the epitomy of amateurism in an age where the game has moved on and they are living in the past.

The lads who are club delegates are often seriously interested in GAA. They take time to go to the meetings and in turn get elected onto boards. There, they are part of a decision making process.

The thing is there is a disconnect between these lads and the wider public, eg the parent of a child playing for that club. The parent might have totally different views to the Co. board delegate but they don't have the time to put into GAA. So their views are often not represented which causes the disconnect.

I wouldn't necessarily blame the county boards around the country - it is a two way process to improve the boards and their decision making and until the wider public (e.g. people like me) give time to the co. board's activities, we can't really complain about them.
