Town/Village/Parish with most GAA clubs

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

What town (or village, parish) has the most GAA clubs? I've excluded cities because they can't really count. Lurgan is surely up there, population of around 20k (40% of which is Unionist) with 5 clubs, which I think is pretty good going. There would also be another 5 GAA clubs within 5 miles of the town.

Lurgan, Co Armagh:
Clan na Gael (football, ladies football, camogie)
Clann Éireann (football, ladies football, handball)
Seán Tracey's (hurling)
St. Paul's (football, ladies football)
St. Peter's (football, ladies football)

Dundalk has eight clubs within the town.
Six football clubs:
Clan na Gael
Dowdallshill
Dundalk Gaels
Dundalk Young Irelands
Na Piarsaigh
Sean O Mahoneys

Two Hurling clubs
Naomh Moinne
Pearse Og

Interesting topic. I guess the best way to look at it is on a per capita, or population density, basis. Carrick-on-Suir does pretty well, it only has a population of approx. 5850, but it has 3 clubs (Swans, Davins, and I think St. Mollerans) in its environs.

On a related note, outside of Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny, which of the larger urban centers (maybe with a pop of 10,000+) would have the most amount of hurling clubs, or have the largest hurling clubs, per capita?

In Mayo all of the towns and villages have one club only, so it wouldn't be us. Believe it's common down in Kerry to have two or three clubs in a town?

Gaafarmer that's a lot of clubs for that population. What's the break down with football and hurling clubs in the town?

There's 3 clubs in one small parish in Laois - Ballylinan, Arles Kilcruise and Arles Killeen.

Gleebo - ballina has two clubs...Stephenaties and Ardnaree. You could also make a case for Castlebar with Breaffy practically a suburb of Castlebar.

Very few towns in Ulster have more than one main club, with possibly a smaller hurling club being the only other GAA unit within that town. Usually large towns have a substantial unionist population which takes away the need for a second club. Exceptions seem to be:

Co Antrim: ?
Co Armagh: Armagh (3 clubs), Camlough (2 clubs), Keady (2 clubs), Lurgan (5 clubs)
Co Cavan: ?
Co Derry: Dungiven (2 clubs)
Co Donegal: Letterkenny (2 clubs)
Co Down: Newry (3 clubs)
Co Fermanagh: ?
Co Monaghan: ?
Co Tyrone: Carrickmore (2 clubs), Dungannon (2 clubs), Omagh (2 clubs) Strabane (2 clubs)

I'm sure someone can fill in the gaps

Thought Craobh Rua was Bessbrook? I know Ballyholland is on the fringes of Newry but I'm more talking actual town teams. Corringshego I clean forgot about.

Newry is definitely up there. Ballyholland and Saval are only a mile or two from Newry as well as Bosco, Shamrocks and Mitchell's from Newry itself. I'm sure Saval and Ballyholland probably have a few players from Newry itself as well.

Ballylinan and the two Arles teams in Laois and Davins, Swans (Tipperary) and St. Molleran's (Waterford) in Carrick-on-Suir were the two I thought of first.

Clonmel have Clonmel Óg, Commercials (football) and St. Mary's (hurling) with Moyle Rovers just on the edge of town.

I remember being up in West Belfast and being at a ground which had 3 pitches which I remarked was great facilities for one club only to be told they belonged to 3 different clubs! Think St. Paul's and O'Donovan Rossa were among them but I can't be sure. Any Antrim heads know what I'm on about?

Craobh Rua is High Street Bessbrook - but is less than 1/2 mile from Camlough,

Ballyholland is definately a Newry Club now, Newry is built up from Courtney Hill up to Ballyholland.... But I can understand why they want to keep the identy separate from the other 3 Down Newry Clubs

Corrinshego are playing Division 2 football next yr, so hopefully you won't forget them again!!

That would be St Pauls, Rossa and Sarsfields roundball. There's probably another 10 clubs within 4/5 miles of those 3.

Very few towns in Wicklow have much more than one. Bray has 2. Bray Emmets and Feargal Og. Feargal Og are a weak enough outfit. This is real progress for the GAA - Bray was a complete soccer town until the 2000s when great underage work turned Bray from having no underage structures in hurling to now in 2015 being back to back Senior Hurling Champions.

Arklow has separate hurling and football clubs. Arklow Rock Parnells and Arklow Geraldines. Wicklow Town and Rathnew are the same parish. With the expanse of Wicklow Town, the two are almost the one town now. They contest the County Final fairly often. Many of the families would be related etc. Can't think of any more in the county.

Dungannon town has Eoghan Ruadh hurling and Clarkes football. Edendork draw a lot from the town Population is about 10K with 30% unionist.

The parish itself has another 3 football teams with Edenedork, Killyman and Clonmore in Armagh.

Within about a 6 mile radius, and with players/members living in or close to the town, there is Eglish, Moy, Collegeland, Killishill, Galbally, Donaghmore, Rock, Brackaville, Coalisland, Clonoe, Derrytresk. All these clubs would have ladies football or camogie teams also.
