Reward long range point taking

(Oldest Posts First)

I was just wondering would any of you be in favour of a trial on long range points being rewarded with an extra score. (2 points instead of 1)

I think it could make an improvement to our game. It would work best at inter county level but would need a TMO or hawkeye type system for awarding the score.

I think it might take to much patrolling at club level.

Say any score outside the 45 to be awarded and extra point.

It would reduce fouling out the field.
Reward good long range score taking.
Reduce the effect of the blanket defence as teams would have to move the blanket further from goal and leave space inside.
It could also add to some thrilling finishes too games.

I at least think there has been crazier ideas suggested?

Way crazier ideas than that. Like a basketball 3 pointer. Could make a great finish to a game. A pointer for a draw, outside the 45 for the 2 points and a win.

not a bad idea but a point from deep in the corner is just as good if not better than one from 45 out. It could also see the end of crazy goal rushes at the end of a game when a team is down by one

Interesting idea but may be tricky for a referee to police. Look how many incorrect calls are made regarding penalties where the foul is close to the edge of the square.

nah there would be too many hail mary efforts when better options are inside and yes it would just be another thing to get right for referees and umpires.

However, a sideline cut in hurling should be a two pointer all day, terrific skill

good idea. At county level you would need a ref in both halves off the pitch. This could help keep tabs on off the ball fouling & police the idea of shooting from long range. Surely a 25 m radius white line could be lined onto the pitch at each end to outline the scoring area which determines if 2 points is applicable. The way that county level has progressed & the speed etc that it is played at, it only makes sense to have 2 match officials in my opinion. Would take the pressure off one official to keep up with & make all the hard calls in a split second.
