Anyone have any idea on what players are currently training with the squad in Ashbourne?

There's very little talk of the team. Just read there though that Michael Murphy has opted out so he's one we know isn't training!

Players I think are a must:

Aidan O'Shea
Colm Begley
Seán Cavanagh
Chrissy McKaigue
Zach Tuohy
Pearce Hanley

I prefer the shinty international to this rubbish....we should do what they do in the Shinty and pick only players (more or less) from the 2nd tier counties as a reward. The Aussies don't take it seriously so why should we

Any player volunteering for it needs their head examined. It simply isn't worth putting your life on the line for a nothing game where the audience is turning up to see a brawl, not a sport. Amateur players up against heavy weight lifting full time professionals means that the physical battle is lost before Ireland even take to the field. Whatever football that does take place is too stop-start anyway. There is simply no flow to a game where you can call a mark following a five yard pass. Nonsense stuff and should have been done away with years ago.

I'm in agreement with Joxer on this. Time to stop this experiment, and market Gaelic football properly instead.

i used to be a big advocate of this tournament. Now, I have no interest. Its a load of rubbish and most players from the bigger counties couldnt care less anymore.
The less Dubs the better

Most players seem keen. Its their only chance to represent their country.

Last year's game was actually quite good. They seem to have gotten the balance right finally with the rules and it was very enjoyable.

Thought the kickout rule introduced last year made for a great contest. The Aussies also made sure to pick only All Australians (All Stars).
Indeed it would be good for Gaelic Football to introduce the same kick-out rule.

The International Rules series is a complete joke and a complete waste of money, the sooner it disappears the better. Utterly meaningless games that nobody cares a toss about, beyond the lucky few getting a free jolly on the back of it.

In my opinion the GAA should take the finance directed at the IR and for once properly promote the interprovincials. As a mini-tournament featuring the very best players in Ireland competing against each other it should be incredibly easy to market and yet the GAA don't even bother. Its pathetic.

Yes, the interprovincials are also called the Railway Cup.

The shinty shouldn't be played in Dublin as we all know the historical connection it has to Ulster, it should be played in Newry like last year. The players wshould preferably be from Ulster counties too.

worrying thing last year was the Aussies skills with the round ball were far better than ours!

It is a good challenge for our guys to be fair. What annoys me is if we win we are almost apologetic and the aussies then claim they don't care about it. If the aussies win they are all in your face claiming the game is practically Gaelic football and they beat us at our own game. We of course believe this and start questioning our ball skills and all that.

The fact is if our kick passing looks bad in this game it is not lack of skill it is purely because it is a completely different type of kick pass that is required. A pass that goes against every instinct of a Gaelic footballer. A good Gaelic foot pass sees the ball bounce up in to the players chest, a suicide pass in this game where it must be pinged in to a mans hands to allow him mark and avoid him being creamed in a tackle.

Another myth is that this game is closer to Gaelic football than aussie rules. Everything about maintaining possession of the ball is in the from the aussie game the mark, the steps, the tackle and as mentioned above the flight of the ball for a foot pass. Just because there is a round ball and a pair of nets doesn't make this Gaelic football.

Our guys deserve massive credit for making big adjustments and competing. If we are doing this hopefully we will do it right an put out a strong team. The aussies are one sickening shower to lose to!

Not in the slightest bit bothered about this game tbh, but its still a hell of alot better than the railway cup.
