Worst GAA songs

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It's this time of year again when the songsmiths deploy their talents to support their native team.

This is a personal favourite. Think it's pure class

They are all terrible, except Dancing at the Crossroads, but only that, everything else is cringe.

I think Mayo have the monopoly on the worst GAA songs, some of the ones for the 2012 final against Donegal were truly atrocious.

There's very few good ones, Jimmy's winning matches was annoyingly catchy and dancing at the crossroads was a good laugh.

Down in Kerry, we don't go in much for the All Ireland songs thing, but a pretty poor one that springs to mind is the one for the 2000 final, 'We Want Same Maguire' by the Border Boys (sung to the tune of Billy Joel's 'We didn't start the fire')

to be fair "Jimmy's Winnin Matches" is good. the rest are all sh@@@te.

I didn't realise "the green and red of Mayo" was a GAA song as such. It is a great song but I think it's a homage to the county rather than it's GAA teams.

Wexford's Purple & Gold is a good song. It's not just 'we're wexford we are great' it is about a father & son going to a match.

A good song for anyone who went to games with their Parents or is taking their kids to games these days.

Wexford has a good few GAA songs, Cuchulainns son about nicky rackard, + bobby rackard from Killane, dancing at the crossroads, the purple and gold are all excellent.

However, "the ballad of matty forde" is a total dishonour to the human race.

It is.

If you think about it most of us end up going to games with our parents. I look forward to bringing my young chap to games too. Most of the other songs tend to focus on the Geography of the situation (Limerick you're a lady - which isn't really a GAA Song) or on local activities. 'Jimmy's winnin matches' was cool as you had a man not from Ireland as far as I know who had integrated to our society and was having the craic, as it should be.

The Purple and Gold is more about history and tradition (mention of the Rackards) talks of the beauty of their county colours. The first line is 'A father and Son' so it paints a picture.

Sean Flood sang it the night of the 1996 All-Ireland final on TV and it almost broke my heart to hear it as we had lost, but all these years on, it stands out for me head & shoulders above the rest.

To be fair they are as cheesy as Xmas songs but f your team gets to the final every county has them, Tyrone had a few good and original songs but the most cringeworthy one has to be Cav-a-nagh na na na na na na na

Quality Street did an excellent cover of Bastille's Pompeii ahead of Mayo's All-Ireland final with Dublin two years ago. I'd link it, only for the fact it was taken down by You Tube (for copyright reasons, I'm guessing).

Must admit that Jimmy's Winning Matches was so catchy that I almost found myself humming it in the minutes after the 2012 All-Ireland final!
