Hogan's feet

(Oldest Posts First)

Big spread about Richie's blisters. But what about when the likes of The Babs, John Connolly, and Frank Burke (surely there were others) prowled that park in their bare feet!

Have hurlers become soft?

Happens to me quite a lot when I play football. My blisters would not be anyway near as big as that and believe me it effects your performance a lot. You also can't just say your injured and you can't play because of sore feet

Austin Gleeson had to change his boots during the match at one stage because of his studs. And I am guessing Hogan was also wearing screw in studs. Surely to god lads know in this day and age to wear moulded studs and not screw in ones this time of year.

The GAA should bring in mandatory cushioned in-soles.

Can never understand why the Kilkenny lads didn't let plenty of low ball in & around Babs in that 71 final. A hurley removing a couple of layers of skin off the middle 3 toes would make any fella put the boots back on.

It raises the issue of how thin modern day socks are.

Original post was tongue-in-cheek, in case that wasn't sussed. Reckon none come/came tougher than KK hurling vintage of recent years.

But, what I was alluding to, and no-one yet seems to have expanded on it, who else ever played bare-footed in Croke Park? I remember The Babs in '71 (and I'd say he did that a few times in Munster before and after.) Connolly and Burke did it for Galway in a semi-final, '78 or '79 I'd say. But can anyone remember anyone else doing it? Even in football?

Not an issue with him not being prepared or not being aware that he should be wearing molded studs! its the surface, players slip too much with molded studs so need the screw ins for grip and stability.

Jason Sherlock lost a boot & stuck a ball in the top corner v Cork 20 or so years ago. Not barefoot though.

Not a prob for Mayo boys who regularly climb the Croagh Patrick in bare feet as part of training. But then as we know, there are worse pains than the physical variety.
