Drug Testing

(Oldest Posts First)

Just reading that Darren Mc Curry had to wait almost two hours after his game was over for a drugs test. this is terrible for the GAA to allow this happen to one of their players, surley the people doing this test were made aware of match times. he should have had his test done once he came off the field. is it true that the Sligo player selected was a yound Doctor who was going home to go on duty and had to wait the same wait. ridiculous.

It was a stupid amount of time to be waiting and I'm sure he wanted to go celebrate the win with his team/gf/family or watch the Donegal/Galway game.

What is the punishment if there was drugs found in his system anyway? I don't think the GAA have a written rule on this where they have a certain length (if any) if the player is found guilty and I dont think ive heard of a player that has been caught using.

The GAA in an Amateur sport with professional morals, as years go by playing GAA for even club never mind county has become more time consuming, committing, strict that it is bordering professional. High profile players are even moving to Dublin clubs for jobs therefore moving club and having to travel to their home county for training if selected.

It doesn't say why he was waiting. Maybe he couldn't produce a sample as that's held up players for hours before... so dehydrated etc
It will depend on the circumstances as to why they were so long as to whether it was right or not....

Players can get up to 2/4 year bans for failed tests. The GAA are signed up to Irish Sports Council/WADA regulations an players have to get ban if found to have taken substances

Player left waiting in the dark

Did I hear right about a Tyrone player been left in the dark for a random drug testing after Saturday's game ? Don't know if its true but the Donegal game was over and he was still waiting. The guards told him to leave as Croke Park was being locked up around 8pm. Any truth in this ?

What is the prupose of drug testing? Is there a difference between a cyclist taking drugs and say a goalkeeper on a GAA team?

Now has the GAA signed up to this for player welfare?
or
Is it to stop cheating? But then you must define how can a corner back taking performence inhancing drugs can be classified as cheating?

Or is it because as this article argues: "There has also been scepticism among players - which still lingers to an extent to this day - that they are paying the price for the GAA's desire for ISC grants, which are dependent on acceptance of testing."

and "The same of course applies to the player grants, which created controversy on their introduction seven years ago but which in the meantime have dropped in value to a pittance (less than €1,000 per annum) even though they cost the government nearly €1 million and have been a sore point with the ISC and Department of Sport.
In recent years Gaelic Games have registered as up there behind athletics and cycling as the third most-tested by the ISC - although rugby also undertakes additional drug testing, funded by the sport itself."

The article goes on by quoting Dr Una May, the ISC director of anti-doping "We have to use our resources wisely," said Dr May, "so we target our tests where we believe there are risks. We also target athletes on individual grants from the Government because there is an accountability there."

So basically we have drug testing in the GAA to secure grants, all sports grants must be underpinned by adherence to drug testing.

So basically it is meaningless and has no grounds other the one area the body is not interested in - the actual player.

I don't see how its meaningless for these tests. Yes the tests take place in part due to threats to withdraw funding but would you rather the alternative without tests etc? The grounds for all these tests are much more than you are stating they are.....

If player left without providing testers with a sample they would get a ban.
