Kilkenny's 1st piece of silverware 2015

(Oldest Posts First)

Kilkenny often get put down and derided by some on here for their lack of commitment to football. So, congratulations to the Kilkenny footballers on winning the British Junior Football Championship last Saturday.

It is a bit of a joke that Kilkenny are the only county who do not have a Senior intercounty team.Cockney,i think the derision is justified in this case.

Do you also think it is a "a bit of a joke" that 18 counties do not have a Senior inter county hurling team?

Which 18 counties don't have a senior inter-county hurling team? You're not referring to teams who compete in the Ring/Rackard/Meaghar cups, are you? Because, those are inter-county hurling teams, playing in pretty exciting/competitive All Ireland competitions. For me, the Lory Meaghar final has been one of the best games of the year so far

It is better to be excellent at something than being useless at everything. Kilkenny are the best at what they do mainly hurling. Look at all the games played so far in both hurling and football and it is pathetic so watch some of the teams competing. How may counties in football stand a chance to win the all Ireland? Kilkenny was never a football county but they sure make up for it in hurling.

Marlon, I am referring to the teams that play in the Ring/Rackard/Meaghar cups. The poster I was replying to stated Senior inter county teams. By the way, I agree with all you say about the Ring/Rackard/Meaghar cups.

By winning the British Championship, Kilkenny will now now play Connacht champions Mayo in the Junior All Ireland Semi-Final, a game which will be played in Nowlan Park on July 25th

Which 18 counties are you talking about cockney.Forgive my ignorance, but i thought all bar Cavan(i think)had a hurling team?Kilkenny being the only county out of 34 in football(London and New York)that cannot field a senior team, for whatever reason,is a sorry state of affairs.

cuederocket People don't seem to understand football is not a sport in Kilkenny they hate it , handball is more popular than football I for one if I got a chance in Croke park of going to a handball match or watch a football match I would pick the first. A lot of Counties in the lower grades of hurling have imported players even your own county still have two or three players from other counties which I think is bad regarding all the money Dublin are getting.

Never understand the Kilkenny bashing for not having an inter county football team. Hurling is just vastly more popular and like the original poster suggests, isn't it good to see them competing at some level than none?

If they could build on this now and look towards creating a team who will compete at some higher level wouldn't that be acceptable to all? But they have to start somewhere.

Some people here have taqken issue with the comment that 18 counties don't have a Senior Hurling team. It is a fair point. Those teams might not be playing at McCarthy Cup level but they are competing at a level that is suitable to their standard. That is not happening in most of Gaelic Football so both codes can learn from each other. I'd like to see a 3 tier Gaelic Football structure so that I'd get the chance to see Limerick potentially play in an All-Ireland final. I've seen us play in a Div 2 NFL final, a few Munster finals and if there was a chance of this happening more regularly in football it would promote the game.

johnwhite12 how can you say football is not a sport in KK? Over 30 different clubs have won you senior football championship and Glenmore and Railyard have 20 title each. Louth only have 31. Waterford about the same etc The first eve game under GAA rules in football took place in KK dont forget. Hurling used to almost be a B sport behind football and cricket from what ive read

Fair play for winning but how people can say its not a spot in KK is beyond me. It can come big in time......dont forget

Johnwhite,i dont believe everybody hates football in Kilkenny.Ive seen Brian Cody and Jackie Tyrell at a Dublin All Ireland football final. It must be fierce tough on the football people in the county. There are quite a few smaller counties than Kilkenny that can field a team in both codes.Their smaller neighbours Carlow have no problem doing so.There is obviously no will from the county board, schools, clubs etc to promote football or try to get young Kilkenny men interested in the game.

Well even if they do hate football in KK I say fair play to them. It's a game that as far as Im concerned is gone past its sell-by date.A very good game once upon a time...about as exciting as watching paint dry most of the time now!

Fair play to them, fully deserved. See former Donegal player Paddy McGonigley is playing for them now.

Don't really understand why they don't still compete in the Leinster Junior Championship though

John,i said that surely not everybody in the county hates football. The lads that won in England must enjoy it.Didnt Danesfort and another Kilkenny club win their respective Feiles recently?Obviously you live and breath it down there.Youd prefer to watch handball over football?Fair enough.Do you watch the All Ireland football final?
