Counties or Clubs?

(Oldest Posts First)

Following the recent event in Antrim Id like to know is there any other county boards that put club before county and vis versa. I know a lot of Derry folk couldnt came less about the county. i know a few who would rather see their club win Ulster than Derry win sam. Thankfully our board has rearranged some games this year to help the county team.

Any other boards or fans out there who put club over county?

I can never really fully decide if I'm more of a club or county guy . Getting the national recognition for winning Sam is great but then again , everyone knows everyone within the club . Cannot answer it ! I'd say our county board picks the county over club !

Guessing you are not a Glenswilly man then ha ha. Im guessing they would go for county considering they have never won an ulster but have an all ireland winning and 3 time ulster wining captain in their ranks

In Mayo it's the county first, clubs aren't given a thought until money is due from the clubs like funding for the county team etc

I guess its all a lot to do with a tradition of success at national level Doire.

Kerry is an interesting example, in football the county is the be all and end all and while we do love our clubs I doubt you would come across many clubmen who would swap a county championship for Kerry winning an All Ireland. That mentality is probably helped by the amount of divisional sides playing in our championship, which lack the identity of a club itself and which serve a purpose of unearthing players for county team.

But in hurling it was oh so different until the last few years. We have an extremely competitive and passionately followed hurling championship centred on 8 teams in a small geographical area in north Kerry. The rivalries between the clubs are veracious and players didn't give a damn about the county side, the club was all that mattered. It plagued Kerry hurling for years, fella's from Ballyduff wouldn't play on the county team because a Kimoyley man was in charge etc For a long time some of the best hurlers in Kerry went no where near the set up and managers would pick their own clubmen above other more talented players.

It crippled Kerry hurling and it's only in the past decade when we have looked to outside managers to take charge of the setup and select the best players, regardless of where they come from that players have rowed in behind the county team. The benefit has been obvious, particularly in the last two years on a national level. I just hope the bad old days are banished forever.

I can see the parallels between Kerry hurling in the past and the current way of things in Antrim football....

Donegal winning an All Ireland is fantastic. But I can only imagine what a club All Ireland must feel like. When a wee village like Caltra can win a club All Ireland the craic must have been mental after it.
