Has Ulster football had a negative effect ?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Simple enough question, which I am sure will cause all sorts of offence, but I think in light of recent events, between the ultra defensive styles of football, the sledging that has been taken to a new level, the fighting the viciousness that while present nationwide at times seems endemic in Ulster football (by which I mean the 9 counties, not 6), I think its a fair question to ask.
Sean Cav more or less said today its so bad he fears for the safety of a player with a mental illness, Benny Coulter said 2 years back that he hated Ulster football and much preferred the qualifiers to the provincial championship etc.

Its a fair question and a fair debate. Has Ulster football been a negative effect on Gaelic Football in recent years

Sorry lads, for all the great players that have emerged from the province, I do believe that the game as a whole has suffered as a result of Ulster tactics and behaviour

Yes.
There have been some positives too, but undoubtedly it has had a negative effect also. One day some ref is just going to call them on everything, and we will have a game with about 10 players each. That is what it needs I believe.

When your playing in a province that is ultra competitive you can expect things to be played on the edge and hen played on the edge things do get nasty......

So if your playing in any of the other provinces this is hard to understand........

I did not say it was off limits TheMaster - I was in a sarcastic way saying that this topic is highly original - god I hate when I have to start explaining to folk.

No limits, simply betrays a lack of understanding and no small amount of ignorance along the way, but hey, if your own provincial championships are so devoid of competition and interest, fill your boots lads.

I just hate it when people say that hitting and fighting and sledging are "manly".
Im all for a bit of squaring up, a bit of fist pumping and all that, but theres a difference between manliness and nastiness.
I dont want to fall out personally with anyone, no matter where theyre from, the nastiness is admittedly a nationwide thing, but you do seem to see it more when theres an Ulster team involved.
I found it ironic reading Seaqn Cavanaghs interview on todays indo, because from what Ive seen his teammates, some past, some present are the worst offenders.

ben, then how come it wasn't happening in ulster in the early 90s when they had 4 all Ireland winners in a row with 3 different teams? It was more competitive then than it is now...

Full stadiums, close games and big hits, points, goals and saves...........give me Lenister football anyday to watch one team beat another by 17 points. Last time i checked this was a mans game......sorry if some big tackles and name calling hurt your feelings!!

Master - if Donegal played in a nice cushy province like yours , I think it might be different . I don't know where your visceral hatred of all things Ulster comes from . Mayo are no angels either , there were plenty of verbals dished out by your players when you's hammered us in 2013 , not to mention the embarrassing fist pumps at every second . I won't even begin with your supporters !

joncarter "Kevin Walsh's charges committed 42 fouls during the course of the game - more than Tyrone and Donegal combined!"

Explain?

Have to agree with you on this one Liam, in the cold light of day some 12 years or so after the emergence of Tyrone as a force in the game, Gaelic football has suffered immeasurable because of the 'gamesmanship' which has crept into our game as a result of Ulster teams becoming more competitive at the top level. The sad thing is the likes of that Tyrone side were more than good enough to win all they did without resorting to some of their antics.

The facts speak for themselves, look at the disgraceful carry on of the Tyrone minors in 2013 against Kerry, look at the U-21 final two weeks ago, look at the scenes last Sunday which are omnipresent at many high profile Ulster championship matches.

alot of hypocrisy here.
When we discuss sledging, alot of the Ulster poster here say we should get over it. Grow up, be a man and all that rubbish.....
The same fellas go absolutely cracked when someone slags off their province.
Id rather someone slag off my province than slag off my family.
