Carlow Video

(Oldest Posts First)

Carlow are putting alot into strength training i didnt see
a football in the whole video they might be better off honing
their skill because strength will only get you so far.
Looks like Laois are going to get hit hard skills will win out
in the end

That struck me watching the video- where are all the footballs!

Can only assume that because the conditioning work might be seen mentally tougher the manager decided to put it in to what essentially a motivational video.

i would imagine the chose the more physical stuff to show that they are putting in a big effort, not to intimidate the leix lads.
and yes you are right leix will win with their football skill, possibly by 15 to 20 points

do you honestly think that video is the sum total of their preparation? come lads, its like Tuesday's strength and conditioning session with a couple of background tunes to spice it up.

I fancy Carlow to cause a bit of an upset in this one, despite pretty much everybody saying otherwise. Partly because I have always really liked Carlow as a County, and partly because I genuinely feel they have so much untapped potential in football even for a very small county.

I know this Laois team pretty well, and have watch them play in quite a few games in recent years. Generally speaking, they are defensively very sound, and when up for a game, they can make the best in the business struggle for long periods.

However they may well enter this game with one eye on the next round, which can sometimes be all it takes to cause a shock. And I know Carlow have been putting in a huge effort in the past few months, so a shock is not totally out of the question. I don't doubt Laois are huge favourites, but the men along the Barrow might just do it.

The video is all well and good, but after tonights result its a little embarrassing. Maybe if they had have played more ball in training they would b better off. You can only do so much in strength and conditioning, in the long run skill and quality comes through.

Preddan, you surely dont think that the video was reflecting their training in preparation for the game. It was just showing a sample of the life as a modern inter county footballer. Like it or hate it, strenght and conditioning has become a fundamental part of the game these days just as much as skill and Carlow are no different from any other county in that regard

Well said poppinpoints. To be honest that Carlow panel has put huge effort in this past six months but injuries to key players and Brendan Murphy's withdrawal left us way short of the quality needed to make a game of it last night. One other thing that was obvious was despite all the S&C work the Carlow team has put in they still looked like waifs beside the Leix players.

That game was no good for us last night with kildare up next, we were just going through the motions and we missed another 3 goals. A carlow supporter was telling last night that carlow have lost their last 3 championship games meath and clare last year and us last night by a whopping 62 points so its not strenght and conditioning they need its footballers.

Sorry to be pedantic big bite but that stat is not quite accurate as it overlooks the fact that between the Meath and Clare games last year we played very well to beat Waterford in the first round of the qualifiers.

Still, you're right about us needing more footballers but in Carlow they're hard to produce and then hard to keep in these times. Nevertheless there is a lot of very hard work being done in our new training centre so hopefully this past few years is just a temporary dip in fortunes and not a terminal decline.

there is nothing been done onion, there was a football forum in carlow last year to try improve things, all it turned out to be was a publicity stunt by the county board, they excluded any opinion that did not fit with their own pre determined views

I disagree Barrowsider. The work that is being done with the Carlow Colts in Fenagh is much more intensive now than ever before with previous development squads. And the results are improving at under 14,15 and 16.

Would it be helpful at all in the overall scheme of things if Carlow was to pull out of senior football both in championship and league.?

What Carlow needs is something like Kerry in the hurling.
Carlow football probably has a bigger pick than the Kerry hurlers.

Kerry hurlers pulling out of the Munster Senior Championship was the best thing they ever did.
They were at a very low ebb with no real commitment to the county.

They were able to lick their wounds and concentrate on bringing young fellas through and have found a great level with the Cristy Ring Cup.
That is their CHAMPIONSHIP to aim for at the start of the year and to Kerry winning this competition is similar to Kilkenny winning the Liam Mccarthy

If there was a competition like the Tommy Murphy Cup where Carlow and other counties alike could get good standard championships games under their belt.
Bide their time in the second level AI competition and if strong enough then after winning it get promoted to AI Senior Competition the following year.

But again there probably would not be enough support for these minnow counties to leave the AI Championship and their provincial championships
