Monaghan footballer under investigation for doping

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Seen it in the news this morning.

Worrying to hear, with fitness levels reaching ridiculous levels and modern day footballers essentially muscle bound athletes with skill being substituted for brawn and conditioning could it be the tip of the iceberg in the modern game!

Is it a current Monaghan player who is under investigation? The article on hogan stand said he had been a panel member in the past. I would be surprised if many players would take steroids or am I just totally out of touch.

Only inter county players are tested so I don't get that he doesn't play anymore? Is he not playing anymore cause he was caught? Not surprised it's rampant in all sports all over the world why should we be any different?

Clondalkin the article states that he was a fringe player and not on the panel anymore ie he was on a trial panel and didnt make the final panel.

Before people start jumping to conclusions, I think they should wait until the steroids have been shown to be used for performance enhancement.

There are many explanations for testing positive for steroids, as shown with Aidan O' Mahoney in 2008, many people are given steroids if they have a bad infection.

Could have failed for any number of reasons tbh, wouldn't read too much into a failed test which you could fail for any number of over the counter cures.

That being said, if all intercounty players were tested right now - I think the results would shock.

My point is only inter county players are tested club players are not he's obviously on the panel wether fringe or not, like if he's on a B panel I'd be very surprised they test him. Hopefully he's innocent

why was he tested if he's not even on the panel?

I wonder when the test was, as the reports seem fairly specific that its not a regular. Do they test after McKenna Cup games I wonder?

That's the point - he must be on the panel or at least must have been at the time the test was done.
But agree with previous poster - if all county footballers were tested for steroids right now, I'd guess that 5-10% would fail.

They were discussing this briefly on Today FM this morning between the sportsnews guy and Neil Delamere. Yer man used to be on the fringes of the Monaghan squad. He says if he took a banned substance he didn't know it was banned. I hope that is the case and that people don't jump to conclusions without hearing the facts first.

This should be taken very seriously imo.

The GAA shouldn't bury its head in the sand like cycling and athletics did for years and rugby is doing now.

If there's an issue it must be dealt with immediately and severely.

Blood tests should be carried out on every county players at random times, from what I hear this isn't an isolated incident.

What are the rules if a player is caught using PED?

I'm surprised there isn't more of it to be honest.

not sure. .but what are the rules for anything in the GAA these days?? Charge the player, issue a ban, let him appeal, uphold the ban, let him appeal again, reduce/remove the ban. Standard really!

Didn't the Clare hurling panel and a couple of other inter-county teams get fines a few years back for changing training location without informing the doping authorities? I'd say with the level of testing it'd be fairly simple to avoid getting caught at the moment, I think only a couple of years ago there was about 80 tests done altogether between both codes, only urine tests aswel, very unlikely to find anything unless someone has just taken something 5 minutes before. It goes on in every sport, the only thing I could say for GAA is as amateur sportspeople the price of a proper doping programme would be difficult to attain. Also, there's the question of whether amateur sportspeople should be tested?

No question IMO - there is a financial interest in the success of teams (sponsorship/betting/merchandise/ticket sales/etc.). Where money is involved, there is no question that CHEATING should be looked for and exonerated from the sport.

(just to point out, i am not saying this particular player has cheated until the full story is known)

A big bottle of smoke.
Just the GAA showing that "we're testing".

I think judgement should be reserved until we all get the details.
