Time for the players to sign up..........

...to a behavioural charter.
Im sick of our games being dragged through the mud. we like to think that our heroes are the finest of sportsmen, but the reality is that while they do play for free, some of their antics are disgraceful and wouldnt be seen in any other sport, at least not with the same regularity. We put our stars on a pedestal because "they have to go to work in the morning", but many non GAA people see our players as the worst kind of sportsmen, not much better than animals if the truth be told. Nobody is completely innocent (although some are more guilty than others). Trash talking, sledging, off the ball punch ups etc. are an embarrassment to the GAA, and its time to do something about it. How about all GAA players sign up to a charter, where they agree to accept the consequences of their stepping out of line. No talking to your opponent off the ball, no off the ball physicality. If you break these extremely simple and reasonable rules, youre banned for the following match, no ifs,no buts.
It may not work (because lets face it, asking some players/counties not to taunt or assault their opponents is like asking the pope to convert to islam), but its a hell of alot better than simply ignoring the problem like we do now.

I agree jc, would it work? Probably not , like you say it is in the DNA of some counties (Tyrone) and unfortunately I can't see them stopping .

Your way off, all this behaviiour is glorified in most sports (american football, rugby, aussie rules, cricket, etc.etc.) and it goes on more in soccer than in gah

Well fair enough but i dont want to turn this into another Tyrone bashing thread. My opinions on what lies at the soul of Tyrone GAA are well documented and made me very popular among the red hand posters,so I dont want to revisit it here.
This charter is for EVERYONE because no county in the GAA is completely innocent (although Its not as bad in hurling in fairness).

They've already agreed to abide by the rules. Like you've said some will and some won't abide them. Up to the 7 in-game officials, in championship to police and enforce those rules. Some players are better at staying within the rules and some officials are better at consistently enforcing them.

yet another negative thread...people use sly tactics to get an advantage in every single sport..nothing new here..up to the refs to enforce the rules in a stronger more consistent fashion

A charter, probably the most ludicrous suggestion yet, time for some folk to pull their heads out of their a**** and get with the real world. This forum has been on a steady decline, a downward spiral of pure spitefulness, vindictiveness and negativity and I've had enough. Time for me to take a break from here because I'm effing demoralised by the whole damned thing.

Sorry fabio man but I aint havin that. Yes there are sly tactics in every sport but if a premier league player behaved the way some GAA players behave hed be given a 10 game ban. Off the ball violence, sledging (and believe me,some of the stuff players say to each other is horrible, Ive even heard that dead relatives are made fun of) are way worse in the GAA.
I dont like saying it like, but its true, and it turns people off our games when they see it.

a minority of gaa games...you arent comparing like for like...again only interested in the negative...a behaviour charter?..where are you going?..look at the despicable behaviour in rugby for instance where violence is glorified as a battle..were lucky the gaa doesnt have to pander to the politically correct brigade like yourselfs...soccer for instance has non stop diving and everybody trying to get each other sent off..this goes on every single week..spitting also common place..look at the antics of diego costa

What a stupid remark. Wouldn't being a superb talent be entertainment enough if you didn't go around biting or insulting other players plus you would likely be a far better example to kids learning the game. No its never going to be like that as long as its allowed to continue but to suggest sport needs it is silly.

i seriously doubt the behaviour of luis suarez over the last number of years has turned anybody off the game..in reality most people dont give a toss once they see him perform...the only people who care are the pr people and the media looking for a story

And neither did anyone tune in on the off chance he might bite someone.

Being a wifebeater didnt stop half the world tuning into the sham that was the fight of the century . Great sport the GAA , but post something positive and it barely gets a response , try talking about , biting , drugs , puke football , leinster the pits , kilkenny playing on the edge blah blah and you have an audience .

"No talking to you opponent off the ball". Ah stop will ya! Why on earth would anyone want that? Do you want us to wear earplugs too to drown out crowd abuse?

That's my point if you cared to take a minute and try to understand it.
First off you said sport needs these guys and then you say nobody cares.
The sport would go just fine without them IMO.

God almighty its a mans game. Do you think the like of the gooch or micheal murphy are worried about a bit of verbals from their markers.
Most intercounty players and even club players will have encountered opposition players trying to wind them up but its all part of the game.
However, some examples about sledging players families is a bit over the top but they are grown men and im sure they wont lose much sleep over it.

Can someone create a few threads about any positive aspects of the game. A lot of people i talk to seem to be greatly looking forward to the new championship season but on here i wonder do many actually enjoy the sport at all.
