Mayo Training Costs

(Oldest Posts First)

"In terms of budget, it costs approximately €10,000 per week to train the team." Mike Connelly, Mayo Chairman.

Can anyone tell me what this 10k goes on? Does this sound excessive to anyone else? Getting 30-35 players onto a field, with two or three trainers and lets say 1 doctor and three physios three times a week costs €10K???

Add in players expenses, food, travel to away games, training camps ,hotels etc and it probably averages out around that.

It does seem excessive, but you when you take into account most of Mayos players are based outside Mayo, the mileage claims would contribte to alot of the costs, then medical staff, catering it probably wouldnt be far off 10,000. In Dublin a player is only likely to have a maximum return training journey of 15miles.

Backroom staff (paid) of 5 or 6 or more!!, food, rental, mileage, three or four times a week - it all adds up.

Supposedly that €10,000 doesn't include training camps/hotels etc. That it costs that much for your standard regular weeks training and they didn't train last week so they could put the €10,000 towards the trip to Portugal this week.

Running an intercounty team is a big undertaking these days. Every move you make involves $$$. Ironic that the people providing the entertainment (i.e the players) are the only ones not getting a slice of the action but that's another debate. Paying backroom staff, medical/physio bills, transport, hotel rooms, food, milage allowance, kits, insurance etc all adds up.

10k a week is probably about right for a county the size of Mayo, plus with so many players travelling home for training from dublin etc. It cant be easy. Probably a lot more money involved in it than this in fact.

Very true Yewtree. No doubt some players will get stick over those figures.

I assume the Chairman is talking "on average" €10k a week. Most of the top County teams cost over €500k per year to run. I can also say that mileage only counts for around 15% of the costs.

Well going by the other topic I would say a couple of O'Neills balls.

How much on average would each player receive per mile?

I heard a figure from Donegal about 2 years ago, and when you consider a round trip from Gweedore to Convoy or Castlefin, It would probably be quite a substancial amount of money.

However I think it's only fair, considering how much of their time these lads give up. Essentially the game is almost professional in every sense except for the wage part. So I don't have a problem with expenses been paid out.

The mileage rate for everybody is fifty cent a mile.

Mayo could be having 7-8 sessions a week to cover if the players in Dublin train together separately midweek which I seem to remember they did under Horan for a time at least?
