GAA open to selling Croke Park naming rights

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Reports in this morning's Irish Times about this. Paraic Duffy has since denied this. Would people be in favour of this? Would a normal person ever call Croker anything diffrent?

I've been openminded to Rule 42, the Queen, the "Sky deal" etc but I draw the line here.

I don't see any harm in getting sponsorship for Croke Park, it's only named after an aul bishop anyway, plus it could bring in great revenue for the Gaa.

Just another sign that HQ are fumbling in the greasy till.

And before I get a load of posters pointing out Kingspan Breffni Park and Elvery's McHale Park, I'm aware that various county boards do their fare share of hawking, but IMO Croke Park is of major cultural and historical significance and should not be cheapened in this way.

Sure didn't they sell the naming rights to the Archbishop already??!!!

I have to say though that I don't like the selling off naming rights for stadiums, theatres etc.

They'll always be the Point and Lansdowne Road to me!

You can add Glennon Brothers Pearse Park in longford to that list as well. I agree that Croke Park should never have it's name changed. The historical and cultural benefits of keeping the name outweigh any financial benefits especially in what is supposed to be a non-profit organization.

Take the money aspect out of it and ask the question if you were naming the grounds would you call it Croke Park? you have to wonder, as people naming goes there are far more important people responsible for the formation and success of the GAA than Archbishop Croke. The grounds were named in an era of reverence to the CC - should it now be off limits to the GAA to assess its own past - as I said nothing to do with money just throwing the question out there.

Personally i was in favour of all the major changes down through the years, including the lifting of the ban, changing the championship structures, and opening Croke Park to Rugby and Soccer. But this change i hope wont happen. The Croke Park name and what it means runs very deep to those of us who follow the GAA, and perhaps some others also. Croke Park to me is not about who it is named after, i have no intrest in that, its about the massive occasions like All Ireland Finals watching the games we love played out in this great arena, its about the history of this great stadium going back to the start of the last century. Its also as much about our identity as any of the games played there, and i think attaching the name of some company or corporation on to the Croke Park name would demean all that. They say everything has its price but i hope not this iconic place.

Truth be told I actually like the name Croke Park, even though as zinny pointed out there would be more historically appropriate names for the stadium. I'm not a traditionalist but I'd be happy for Croker to remain sponsorship free and I think it will but it wouldn't kill me either if the Gaa did seek sponsorship for Croker but anyway as royaldunne pointed out we in Meath badly need a stadium sponsor for Pairc Tailteann, so anybody interested?

He was the first patron of the GAA, thered be no-one more appropriate for it to be named after, i suppose, save Cusack, or one of the other founding members. Other early patrons were Davitt and Parnell, they have grounds named after them too (in Parnells case, the grounds is probably more important and prestigous than croker)
Oddly enough, most of the other six founders seem to be largely forgotten, althouigh theres a club in Tipp named after JK Bracken

What would people say if the 'Irish' Sun Newspaper ground wanted to have it named their lovely owner Rupert Murdock?

Would that be OK?
