Another magical day in Croker......

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

.......with the game being played on front of about 70 000 empty seats.
It just looks terrible lads. why cant they move these games to smaller venues where there might be a bit of an atmosphere? I know that Croker is the "hallowed turf" and all, but this is almost embarrassing.
Blanket defence football has the ability to kill the atmosphere even when theres 50 000 people in the audience, but even a great game wont be able to get this crowd going.

The only reason I can think of is that theres a double bill today, but it happens alot in the GAA. Why put a small crowd into a colossal stadium? Must be disheartening for the players too.

The Dubs are hurling ok but Limerick are very poor. Its no surprise now that they werent in the 2a promotion match.

Sitting here in this cavern - a bit like a slow day in the Grande Canyon, enjoyed the one-sided hurling match (Limerick seem to be still on their winter break) and looking forward to Dublin trying to breakdown the blanket - hopefully I'll be surprised. But the burgers are nice and the place is filling up now for the football - this could all have been housed in Parnell park.

Fistball in shocking weather conditions in a 3/4 empty freezing cold wet cavern with no atmosphere. Surely with games of this calibre it's back to Parnell next year for the Dubs. Fingers crossed anyway. A lot of people who had planned to drive up to Clones next week are now not planning on going up to watch this muck. I'm giving it second thoughts myself but no sense in dropping the support for the lads. Better to help them overcome it I think.

Keep the league out of croker and be done with.it. They took leinster hurling and the all Ireland quarter finals out of it. Surely not the place for terrible league matches. Seriously disappointed with limerick too. They didn't even try. Dubs were only ok which bodes even worse for limerick

there was 20 thousand there on a miserable windy wet night
what more do some people want???
nobody whinges when tipp play in thurles in front of 5 or 6 thousand in a 50thousand stadium
when kerry play in killarney in front of 7 or 8 thousand in a 50 thousand stadium
when laois play in portlaoise in front of 3 or 4 thousand in a 25 thousand stadium and so on
20 thousand in a 80 thousand stadium is actually a far better return

Croker has to fund itself. The TV rights bring in income. If the product wasn't so awful I'd have gone to the games myself. I've said it once and I'll say it again...never ever put a football match on after a hurling game. It's like being served a batterburger for second course after having filet mignon for first.

The difference is that Kerry, Tipp and Laois are playing in their own home grounds - Parnell Park is Dublin's home ground and the atmosphere would have been far better in a full Parnell Park than a quarter-full stadium.

Yes and I'm pretty sure that the extra 'revenue' generated from the 10,000 last night was swallowed up in the costs of opening up a large stadium. I remember reading somewhrer that a minimum crowd of 30k is required for Croke Park to cover its costs.

dublin cannot play football games in parnell park as it cannot accomadate the crowd
parnell holds 10 thousand at a health and safety maximum
there was just under 20 thousand in croker last night on a wet windy miserable night
the last day there was 27 thousand thats double and nearly treble the amount of people being able to go to the games
than parnell park would only cater for.
the atmosphere in parnell park is non existent
the club final between vincents and plunketts was overcrowded and you could still hear players calling for the ball
its one of the worst grounds in the country for an atmosphere even with a cracker of a game
what happens on the pitch dictates the atmosphere in the ground
we have had some brilliant atmospheres for league nights in croker
mayo last year springs to mind and the cork semi final of the league last year too
that all comes from what is happening on the pitch
last nights game and the tyrone game were dour poor games thats why atmosphere suffers as the crowd
have nothing to get involved in

Pretty sure? Or just having a guess?

The 30K attendance to break even is a myth used by some lazy journos and fans. It makes no sense that there is one magic number that must attend to cover the cost of opening. Think about it for awhile.

that 30 thousand figure is only neccessary when the entire ground is open and staffed
for these games they only employ and open areas for the demand which means it costs the exact same
as it would in any other venue.

Offaly score 3 points in one half. As i write this it looks like Galway will have 5 in one half.

I think people are losing the plot when it came to last nights game.
