Canon Michael O'Brien, R.I.P.

(Oldest Posts First)

Just saw on the peoples republic website that the canon had passed away. Coached Cork to AIH wins in '84 and '90 as well as coaching at UCC and Farranferris college.
Hurling man to the bone and nice guy as well.

The Canon was a character, a true Gael and a hurling man through and through. May he rest in Peace.

Anyone know what All Ireland Hurling game it was with Canon Micheal O'Brien (RIP) as Bainisteoir of the Cork team and they down by nine points at half time?
Lead footed the team was and the Canon was struggling to motivate the players. He was shouting at them and urging them on without seemingly much response. That was until he said "only two of you are playing well today" Kevin Hennessy, as ever quick on the pull, piped up "and who is the other one Canon?"! The dressing room erupted with laughter and the atmosphere was completely transformed. The team went out for the second half totally relaxed and won the game.

If its an All Ireland Final you are talking about it has to be 1990 against Galway. Think they were 5 down at half time. Only other Final Cork won under the Canon was 1984 in Thurles against Offaly where they led at half time.
